1LT HUD upgrade
The few people who had done the install made it sound fairly straight forward, and Shopdog seemed to corroborate this. Can anyone else confirm this?
Also can anyone that has done this install take a picture of the HUD during the day? I'm afraid that without the special windshield it may not be usable during the day. I mostly want this for the Auto-X which obviously is during the day, so if its blurry or dark I'll skip it.
First, the part is available, so I've heard. Originally, the part was only on special order as a repair part only, but I believe it is now openly available. I've seen it on EBay, but I haven't checked with GMPH yet.
As for the mod itself, I think it's a little silly. Unless you are willing to rip your entire dash open and willing to pay more than a grand for the part alone and willing to spend about 10-12 hours trying to get it to work (that's the average time reported in the forum) and willing to void your warranty (modding electrical parts with the required homemade electrical/data connections = void warranty), then this mod isn't for you.
If you add in labor, you're easily $1500-$2000 into this mod alone. Why not simply get a 3LT car for not that much more?
That's my $0.02.

I have a total of $650 plus my time in this mod, highly worth it. It did take me a full day about 10-11hours but I had several breaks during that time and was enjoying myself so I was in no hurry. In fact I think it took me longer than anyone else on the forum. You could do it in 5- 6 if you are working it but, what is the fun in that. Void warranty....
better not put in a stereo or aftermarket speakers according to MN vette.
I spoke with my dealer and they still warranty my car in fact they would have done the install for me but I chose to do it myself.

MNVette: I bought the 1LT already I can't just get a 3LT now, even if I could I wouldn't I don't need/want: heated seats, 6 CD changer, Bose speakers, or perforated Leather seats. I just want the HUD. If it turns out to be $1000+ I'm not going to do it, its worth between $500-$600 to me plus my time. However even at $1500 its still less than half as much as the 3LT package. So this is a good deal for those that don't want to pay for all the fluff.
Also why is it that you are so passionately opposed to this mod, did someone that installed a HUD into a 1LT run over your dog or something?

mnvette seems to be against any sort of mod... and always ends his rants with "why not just get the 3LT". I like how he says it like you can just go trade it in for a 3LT, no biggie. Well, if you can get it done for $650 plus your time, and that's pretty much the only option you really wanted from the 3LT, I say why not? Unless of course you prefer to spend money like it's coming out your butt, in which case, take mnvette's very useful advice.
First, for C6400hp, I call
Second, as I stated, for the 2 or 3 people who have actually tried this mod, it has taken 10-12 hours, and that's with people who know what they're doing. If you don't, you're going to have to pay someone to do it, and that adds a LOT to the total cost. So, again, you're back in the $1500-$2000 range. For that kind of money, why didn't you simply buy a 3LT car? Yes, yes....GM should offer all the options a'la carte. Great theory, but GM doesn't do that. So, you're spending that kind of money on 1 option that would have come on a 3LT car anyway for just a little bit more money. Hmmm........
Third, I am NOT, repeat NOT, against mods. Anyone who has bothered to read my profile can easily tell that I have modded the crap out of my C6. What I am against are all these yahoos coming in here and saying, "Gee, this mod only cost me a buck and took 5 minutes of my time. Ripping apart the engine block was a piece of cake." Blah, blah, blah. If you want to spend your money on this, be my guest. If you're the GM mechanic of the year, good for you. Very few of us have those kinds of skills, and I certainly don't care how you choose to spend your money. But, I will call
If you honestly think that ripping open the dash, spicing jury-rigged electrical jumpers, and installing non-original electrical equipment in the dash won't void your warranty, good luck. Sure, someone always gets lucky, and their dealer doesn't say boo about it. Good for them. But, let's be honest, few of us have that luxury. If you are going to mod your car, you MUST accept the fact that your warranty is probably going bye-bye. I accept that fact on my Vette, and you should on yours as well. Installing a radio is not the same thing, and you know it - a radio is a long-accepted thing to replace. BUT, if your installer (or you) botch the job, the dealer certainly will void your warranty claim. It happened to me on another car that I own (Best Buy's free install wasn't so "free" after I had to pay the dealership to fix the electrical problems they caused).
so where can I get the HUD for $650. This is a pretty straight forward install, and I don't see where it is taking you guys 10+ hours

By the way, the last ebay auction I saw for the parts, ALL the parts needed closed for $550 (Sept. 07). As with anything price can/may go up. If you need the auction info shoot me a pm.

I bought my HUd out of a new C6 being converted to a race car right here on the forum. I bought the wiring harness from Dennis. $650
eat it

Is true that he may be the only one with the harness to tap the car with though. Good business, find a need, fill it...
