Conventional oils do not meets the GM spec for LSx engines GM4718M
The major brand oils that meet it are:
(either listed on bottle or website)
Shell Fully Synthetic
Pennzoil Platinum
Quaker State HorsePower
Mobil 1
Castrol Syntec
Boutique/exotics that also meet it are
Ammsoil
Royal Purple
There may be others but I am aware of those on the list.
1. any of these should last at least 10,000 miles before the DIC gets to 0% oil life. At that time you should change your oil within the next 500 miles. For most this translates into you current tankful of gas.
2. I have never been able to justify the regular price premium for boutique oils over the above listed major brands.
3. When some one has a special like Menard's current special on an approved GM4718M oil... Quaker State HorsePower $3.98/qt with a $3 mail in rebate/qt... meaning a net cost of $1/qt, I become a "brand ****" and will buy that oil for my LSx engines.
I plan on putting on about 3k per year. How would it be if I changed the filter and topped of the oil at 1 year or 3k? I think a new filter and a topoff would be o.k. ! What say you?

Logical people are content with decades of research on oil breakdown and trust the data and facts behind the oil life monitor and recommendations in the manual. They believe the engineers, they believe the data, they enjoy the benefits of less maintainance, and less wasted oil and filters, and the time saved is much better spent driving these remarkable machines.
Emotional people like to change far more frequently to feel good.

There are a lot of oils which claim to meet the GM4718M standard, but there are only a handful of them on the actual registered list:
