Default No MP3 playback Please help

05 coupe, with NAV. according to the window sticker (wife saved it) it has the Bose premium 7 spkr system ("replaces STD/OPT/PKG Radio"). ...and Its suposed to be MP3 capable, but it's not, it wont play em. OK so what am I missing here? I just recorded a disc with mp3's, tested it on my home stereo and it plays just fine. But not in the vette is there something special I need to do like use a cd+R or cd-R??? Thought I'd check here before taking it to the dealer. Funny thing is it's been like this since April 05, I just didnt think much about it until now (gettin close to the end of warranty ). Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

First 05 NAV have to have a software update before they can play mp3's. If this hasn't been done you need to start there.

Check this out...

MP3 Format

When creating an MP3 disc, the following is a list
of guidelines. If the customer does not follow
these guidelines when recording a CD-R(W), the
CD may not play.

• ID3 tag information is displayed by the radio if
it is available. The radio supports ID3 tag
information v1.0 or v1.1. The radio will display
a file-name, song name, artist name, album
name, and directory name.

• Maximum 32 characters, including spaces, in
a file or folder name. (Note: 28 characters in the song title + 4 characters in the file extension - .MP3.
Also eliminate any non-standard characters [e.g., tildes(~) and accents]).

• Maximum number of folders is 500 with
500 files with a maximum hierarchy of
eight folders. It is recommended to keep the
depth of folders to a minimum in order to keep
down the complexity and confusion in trying
to locate a particular folder during playback.

• Create a folder structure that makes it easy to
find songs while driving. Organize songs by
albums using one folder for each album. Each
folder or album should contain 18 songs
or less.

• The files can be recorded on a CD-R or
CD-RW with a maximum capacity of 700MB.

• DVD with MP3 are not playable on this system.

• The radio will not play a mixed mode CD-R/
RW, a disc recorded with both *.cda and
*.mp3 files.

• The player will support a disc with multiple
sessions, but it is not required that the disc be
finalized. It is recommended to record the disc
all at once.

• Recording format mode 2 or mode 2XA with
Romeo or Joliet file system is not supported
with this player.

• All applicable Mode 1 recording formats are
supported.

• MPEG 2.5 is not supported with this player. File
formats MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 with all bit rates
(including variable) except less than 16kbps are
supported with this player.

• Long files or folder names or a combination of a
large number of files and folders may cause the
player to be unable to play up to the maximum
number of files or folders or affect the reading
speed and time to play.

Also I use CDBurner XP Pro 3 to burn my MP3 CD's... you should be able to google "CDBurner Xp Pro 3" and download it for free..

*VERY IMPORTANT*
Maximum 32 characters, including spaces, in
a file or folder name. (Note: 28 characters in the song title + 4 characters in the file extension - .MP3.
Also eliminate any non-standard characters [e.g., tildes(~) and accents]).

Here is some additional information that may help.

The 2005 cars had it in design but sluggish performance forced it to be disabled. There is a firmware update available either via your dealership (tell them you need the TSB for the static fix). Once complete it will enable the mp3 playback again. You could also search for and download the update here on the forum and install it yourself, it isn't that hard but you must follow the directions to a tee...else disable your radio permanently.

Here are the details of the TSB, including the bulliten number that will help them locate it. I've highlited in bold the part that you are interested.

Service Bulletin #: 05-08-44-014A
Date: December 9, 2005
Subject: ASI Resolution - Poor and/or No Radio Reception, Intermittent Static on FM with Navigational Radio System (Update Radio Software)
Model(s): 2005 Chevrolet Corvette (Domestic and Export) with Navigation Radio

Condition
Some customers may comment on the following conditions:

• Static is heard on stations with an otherwise strong signal, after the ignition is turned on.

• The radio is unable to stop at specific stations when using the "seek" function.

Correction
DO NOT REPLACE THE RADIO

Important: The software is updated using a CD, not through SPS programming. New software, P/N 15853651, can be obtained from GMSPO. Dealers should retain the service CD for future use.

The software update will do the following:

• Modify the signal interface with the ARS module to correct the reception condition.

• Add an on-screen message to remind the customer that a destination is required before a route can be planned.

• Add MP3 functionality.

The navigation/radio software, P/N 15853651, should be updated using the following procedure:
Important:

• This software can ONLY be used for updating the 2005 Corvette navigation radio, P/N 15263014. Do not use these CDs to update any other vehicle's navigation radio. The radio part number can be verified via the Tech 2®.

• Software CDs and a Tech 2® are required to complete this procedure.

• Use of latex gloves is recommended to avoid fingerprints on the products and/or discs.

• If the vehicle is turned "off" during updating, the "software updating" process may not work and a new navigation radio will be required.

Follow the steps below to complete the software update.

Turn the ignition "on" with the engine "off" by holding the ignition switch in "ACC" mode for at least 10 seconds.

Open the tilt screen (navigation screen) to gain access to the DVD drive.

Eject the navigation DVD from the DVD drive (bottom slot).
Important: It may be necessary to close the radio screen for Disc 1 - Navigation to begin operation. If the navigation software version in the navigation radio is the same or higher than v.1312, the software updating will not start.

Insert Disc 1- Navigation software version 1312 into the DVD slot.

"Preparing to Load System Software" is displayed on the screen along with a progress bar. It will take approximately 5 minutes for Disc 1 to load.
After Disc 1 - Navigation has completed the navigation system will automatically restart. Eject disc 1 from the DVD slot. Insert Disc 2 - Audio software version 01.0F into the DVD slot.
Important: Approximately 10-15 seconds after inserting the disc, the screen will go blank. It will appear that the radio has shut down and/or locked up. This is the mode the radio will go into when the software is updating. If the audio software version in the navigation radio is the same as v01.0F, the software updating will not start.

When Disc 2 is completed, the system will automatically restart. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes for the system to restart. Remove Disc 2 - Audio from the DVD drive.
Turn the vehicle off. Open and close the driver's door and wait for 60 seconds.
Turn the vehicle on and reinstall the customer's navigation DVD.
Press the "NAV" button on the navigation radio, then press the "Agree" soft key on the screen.
After the map screen is displayed, touch the map screen the confirm that the map can be scrolled.
Using the Tech 2®, clear any/all DTCs from the radio.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

This was the source that I downloaded from and performed the fix on my Nav head unit. My Vin is in the low 4,000's from October of 2004 so earlier VIN's than the cutoff are all right as well.

and if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, take it to the dealer and they will do it for you. If you update yourself, follow the directions exactly or it will lock your radio up.

That nav system is a tricky beast to get it to play mp3s. If you don't do it exactly the way the vette wants it either it won't recognize the disk, or it will play but will skip tracks, play the incorrect track, repeat the same song over and over. Last summer I resorted to just playing regular audio cds. This year I vow to get it right.

Search mp3, there are many posts on it and will make your head hurt after a while

Actually I believe you can. I have the Nav head unit but I think that the base radio and the 6 disc in dash can both play MP3 cd's as well.

Also, I had trouble playing discs until I realized I had to "finalize" this disc. Some software soesn't finalize by default, and then the car just kicks them out.

One of the most important things is watch the file name length; if the id tags are present, then the file names do not matter because the info from the tag will be displayed. I recorded several mp3 cd's before changing the file names. "All of a sudden" every song on the disc played like it was supposed to. Go figure..

Yes, all text that is in the 'tag' will display on your screen, regardless of the file name.
