I took my car out and after a nice drivethen filled up the tank and went home. Upon cleaning the car, I opened my gas filler door and noticed the cap was seated at an angle I pulled on the cap and it was not on. I know I heard the clicking when I installed the cap. So I tried to screw the cap on, as soon as I turned the cap it did seem to be going on as it began to click, but it was loose and was not on. Remembering an old thread about this problem I sprayed WD40 onto my finger and rubbed the gasket in the cap. The cap then went on and is tight.
So for those that encounter this (CEL will come on when the cap is not on correctly) try a lubricant on the gasket as it will allow the cap to turn and tighten rather then immediately bind and not go on.
Gotta love this board with all the info, thanks to the OP who discovered that the gas cap gasket needed to be lubricated.
Not necessary the cap is fine just that the gasket got dried out because the last couple of times I filled up the gas pump did not automatically kick off and the tank overflowed. Not sure why anyone would want to buy another cap when all they need to do is keep the gasket lubricated and as Gary stated don't push down on the cap when putting the cap on.
But, it is a waste of money...GM money that gets eventually passed on to us when we buy our next toy. Just lube and then screw on lightly while holding up on the gas cap. I did not have to even lube mine...just screw on lightly while pulling up on the cap.

You shouldn't have to put anything on the seal for the cap to work. Had the same problem with my 05. The new cap was covered under the warranty.

Shoot, wish this one worked for me, did make it more secure but the dang light is still coming on.

I'm on my second cap (under warranty) and that damn thing doesn't want to work now either after filling up the Z06 yesterday. Guess it should be expected on $70K+ GM car though, eh?
NO NO NO ... you don't take it to the dealer! you get on the forum and ask everybody's opinion and then bitch and moan about the poor quality GM has and how it should be more like a MB or a BMW or PORSCHE
