I had an 06 with paddle shift. I am thinking about a manual trans this time. I have been reading about "skip shift" and really don't have a clear understanding of it...Anyone care to help? Thanks.
Transmission will direct you from 1st to 4th at low rpm's. If you are beyond 20% throttle, it will let you go directly into 2nd. Not really a big issue IMO. You can buy a skip shift eliminator for 20 bucks.

When certain parameters are met (they are in your owners manual) the computer locks out the shift from 1st to any other gear except 4th. This is done to save gas and provides a higher fuel economy rating, avoiding the gas guzzler tax. This is called CAGS Computer Aided Gear Selection. CAGS eliminator defeats this. It can also be tuned out or driven around.
I have an '06 with 6 speed manual. The first thing I did was have the CAGS deleted from the computer. To me, the CAGS is a PITA, that was easily taken care of.

I personally love the skip shift option. It's really nice not to have to shift the car all the time when moving in slow moving traffic or just putting around. There is really no reason to eliminate it on the C6's as the computer is smart enough now to allow you to go into second if you suddenly change your mind and give it more gas.
I also like having enough power to be able to shift from 2nd right to 4th and/or 5th. These cars have that much power that you can skip a gear or two and keep up with most others on the road.

With the CAGS eliminator you can make the decision yourself and shift when and how you want. I often go 1,3,5 or 1,3,5,6 or even 1,3,6. I don't like having a computer tell me I can't shift to second or third.

I don't have a skip shift eliminator. If you drive the car like you're supposed to you will never even know it's there.
Get the M6 you will love it.

Is my car unique? When the 1-4 light is on I can shift into 3rd with no resistance on the shifter. NONE. So I usually go from 1st to 3rd (when driving very slow and activating the CAGS) then on to 5th and lastly 6th. Hmmmm

CAGS has nothing to do with third gear. It prevents a SECOND gear shift. Otherwise, it is possible that you are shifting just at the point the CAGS is moving out of range. If your car is new and you know for a fact that a CAGS defeat device or a tune has not disabled the operation of the system. The CAGS will only be active if:
This light will come on when:
• The engine coolant temperature is higher than
169°F (76°C),
• the vehicle is going 15 to 19 mph
(24 to 31 km/h) and
• the vehicle 21 percent throttle or less.
If any of those criteria are not met or are exceeded the gate will open and allow the shift to second. The CAGS operates via a soleniod activated gate that will close over the second gear and direct the shift to the fourth gear. You can always shift to third instead of fourth. Third is not restricted.
Talon - new car, no CAGS skip on it. It WILL stop me from 2nd when all parameters are met. The manual, note #13 above, says you can shift ONLY from 1st to 4th when the CAGS is operating. That is what prompted my question. Thanks, it appears that my car is like the others ... the shift to 3rd is normal and not blocked by CAGS.

Good catch. The manual is a bit deceiving. The CAGS was originally put in place to avoid a gas guzzler tax on the Corvette. The way the federal testing for CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) works is that the car is put on a computer and a simulated "drive" is conducted. By having the MN6 shift to 4th under those circumstances allows for a spike in the fuel economy that raises the rated average fuel economy for the car. It helps the Corvette by skipping the gas guzzler tax and it helps GM by helping to raise their average fuel economy across the models. The shift to 4th gives the highest fuel economy. Shifting to third will work to keep you from having to go to 4th and give you a little more torque to pull away if you need to.
