i just sold my C-4 and am ordering an 08 manual. at the auto show i noticed that the 08 manuals don't have the reverse lock out ring that I had on my C-4. No one there could tell me why there isn't one on the 08's. Needless to say it would not be a good thing shifting from 4th into reverse. Does anyone know how this works? Is it done by the computer?
On my O5 there is a solenoid on the transmission that prevents accidental reverse engagement. 08 is a different Tremec transmission - not sure if the mechanism is the same but a "lockout" is there to protect you.
Thanks John, it is truely amazing to me that not one of the Chevy people at the Chicago Auto Show could answer this question for me. you would think that if they are selling a car that retails for between $55-$100 th0ousand dollars they could at least read the owners manual.

Too much work I guess to read the manual and fully understand the product they are selling.

We can't even get most owners on this forum to read the manual, now you want the sales people to read it? Not going to happen!
Real men don't read manuals.
2008 owner's manual, page 2-32.
Your six-speed manual transmission has a feature that
allows you to safely shift into REVERSE (R) while
the vehicle is rolling at less than 3 mph (5 km/h). You
will be locked out if you try to shift into REVERSE (R)
while your vehicle is moving faster than 3 mph (5 km/h).

However, I can tell you that I was able to actually defeat the lockout solenoid on a couple of occasions on my 01Z06 when I failed to get into 5th from 4th gear. Getting into 5th on an upshift was always problematical on that car. Went back to neutral and gave it a hard flick of the wrist rightward and actually raked reverse at 60 mph. Ouch!!! No harm done that I was aware of and I had that car for 10s of thousands of miles afterward.

I don't know how it is with others but in mine, even at a dead stop, you have to make a conscious effort to put the manual transmission in reverse. It feels like there is a spring that you have to apply force against to get it into reverse gear. I would highly doubt that it would go into reverse by accident even if there were no lockout.
Let me retract that last sentence. I forgot about what might happen with drivers more aggressive than I am.

I had a copy of the owners manual two days after my order for the car was placed with the dealer. Downloaded it and printed it off the web (half page sheets, double sided). By the time I picked the car up I had already read through it twice. Even with that, I still missed some things.
