had the "check gas cap" on the message center. coicnidentally, picked up a "check engine" light. I'd thought the engine light might be due to an additive to the gas for cold weather (yeah, the vette goes out below 70 degrees!). the engine light went out after i'd gone through the first tank of gas AFTER the additive (Heet).. lost the gas cap message, too. thought the engine light could also be due to the faulty pressure caused by the loose cap. has anyone experienced this situation ? buying a new gas cap when i go in for service next week. thanks... bob

The fuel system is a pressurized system. If it detects a leak it will do one of two things. The first and most minor is a Check Gas Cap message on the DIC. The second and more significant is a Check engine light. Your CEL is likely due to the loose fitting gas cap. It can be intermittent depending upon how well you get it to fit. The new gas cap should take care of it. It is a two minute swap and worth it for the piece of mine.
Doesn't get really cold in Dallas but I've driven in sub 20 degree temps with no trouble. Shouldn't need an additive to make the gas cap work. Probably either a bad cap or it didn't seat right the first time.
i first got the message in the DIC and later a check engine light. all related to loose cap. bought and installed a new one. much tighter and no messages or lights

You can purchase a gas cap from Gene Culley (GMPartsHouse.com) at this link:
thanks a lot. the forum makes it easy to resolve any problem. i'll order the cap today . glad that it's that simple a fix to a check engine scenario .... bob
Your dealer will probably order one for you at no charge. If they won't, consider looking for a new dealer, especially if you are within the original warranty.
