How does NPP exhaust flow?

How does NPP exhaust flow?

It looks like the cut-out flappers are inside the two inner exhaust tips. Does all exhaust exit the two outer exhaust tips only when the NPP is closed?
I'm just guessing.
How does exhaust flow with NPP flappers open and closed?
