As mentioned they can be plugged. If it is a cut or slice in the tread area no-way. It must be a nail or screw hole that can be plugged in the tread area. Nothing can be done to any radial tire if it is in the sidewall.
anyone have any experience with this, any problems in the long run

I plugged my front tire and did this also on my BMW with no leaks and no problems. I even did a 160 mph on the plugged tire with no problems. Just remember that the puncture has to be on the inner threads of the tire and not on the sidewalls or outer part of the threads.
