Apparently, in Arizona, everyone is too cool to wave.
I've received 1...yes 1 wave since I've been out here.
A gentleman in a VY z06 pulled up right next to me on the 101 (I still had the LMB C6 at the time). I waved and he gave me this "oh yeah you think?" type look.
Sad to say, this is spot on. I think that I am getting 1 out of 5 in AZ at this point in time (mostly from C5ers)
What I've read is the wave started when the 2nd Corvette was made - makes sense since it take 2 cars to "wave". Too bad the BG plant doesn't put a flyer in with the rest of the car's paperwork that discusses the tradition. I think most owners don't even have a clue about the tradition.
The wave is alive and well on the east coast of Florida. You know, sometimes a driver may be busy - like changing the radio station, CDs, patting momma's knee, etc. And sometimes the tinted widows keep you from seeing a wave. But I know the wave is alive - sometimes I even automatically wave, then feel stupid because I'm driving my Silverado. But I really don't think I want to fall into the "search for Vettes while youre driving" mode.
PhatomII is right on. It all started back in '53 when you got a magazine put out by a guy that was trying to get all vet owners connected. I believe it was called Corvette News; and it was free to owners. Nowadays there are so many vets on the road and too many cell phones that people don't realize what the wave stands for. It's not anything secrete, it just means "hi, cool car you have there".
I am on a business trip in southern Alabama just east of Mobile. I was driving between Daphne, Fairhope, and Foley today. Must have past at least 5 Corvettes. Not a single wave returned. We're losing the wave folks.

"It's not anything secrete, it just means "hi, cool car you have there." NOT! It's a tradition that dates back 55 years , something many "new" owners are unaware of and/or could care less about, which is sad indeed. The wave is meant to acknowledge a fellow owner. Motorcycles have picked up on waving to each other for the same reason. The car doesn't have to be "cool", just has to be a Corvette. What I've noticed is that the ratio of waves is in direct proportion to the age of the car - the older the Corvette the more waves.

And maybe the dealer's might also explain it upon purchase, I get lots of waves from C1-4 owners but not many from 5-6 drivers. I think it's one of the unique things about Vette ownership.
I live in central Alabubbabama and I've waved dozens of times at vette guys and gals. the guys look at me like I'm gay and the ladies turn up their noses as if I'm trying to flirt. I quit! Once I made the mistake of waving at a vette when I was in my DD beater Toyota van and the look I got was really weird. Right! Save the wave and energy if you're in Alabama.
