To me, after driving a manual for awhile, It's essentially 'automatic'. The act of shifting becomes a background operation in the brain, basically like breathing. You can be carrying on a conversation, or whatever, and your body senses the RPM, operates the clutch and shift, without conscious effort. I dunno...maybe I've been driving sticks for to long!
That's partially true. You're still using one hand and one leg and some physical action to accomplish that. Which means that if you're also trying to shave, read the paper, or use a cell phone at the same time, you've probably overtaxed your ability to do either activity well.
SO true..... LISTEN very carefully.........A vette is a vette, no matter what tranny you have.....BUT, a sports car is "ONLY"a sports car when you have a stick in your hand and a clutch under your left foot..... I have had 5 vettes, 4 of them were autos, my C6 is a MN6 and it is by far the "funnest" car I have ever owned... There is "NOTHING" like changing gears and barking tires in a sports car.... OK, I am going to go smoke a cigerette now.. and clean myself off!!!!!!!!

I HATE seeing people use cell phones while they drive. Actually I had just jumped off the forum for a few minutes after posting this to search for a "Hang up and DRIVE" license plate bracket.
PS - I don't shave, read the paper, talk on the cell, eat, etc. while driving. At most I have a bottle of water in the car and the only conversations is with the person in the passenger seat! Still, I just find I don't need to 'think' about shift unless I want to.

What with that? I'm sure not saying I'd want an automatic.

And you need to jitter your foot around to simulate the feeling of having the car randomly shift when you don't expect it.

YO,YO,YO - WHAT HE SAY !!! DATS WHAT I'M TALKIN 'BOUT......
Without conscious effort. Go race motocross like I did for 15 years. It just all becomes natural and you don't even think about it. Just like in the Vette, except there are other darn cars around to ruin the fun!
To each his own.... but I prefer the manual in the vette..
Just too much fun.. besides.. what else is there to do when you are driving? Might as well shift and have complete control of the tranny... IMO
I agree that the MN6 is a great way to go, but I must admit that I really love the paddle shifters. It's nice not to have to deal with the clutch. I have also found that, after eight months with my 08, the paddle shifters with the NPP flaps open (thanks again Ed) have become automatic. Unless I am pushing it through some mountain roads or the like, the roar of my NPP subconsiously reminds me when it's time to shift. The MN6 is great, but the paddle shifters/NPP/M2W is the perfect setup for me.

Ok I've listened....and I can honestly say opinions are like.....well you know the rest. I prefer my automatic. I have owned MANY 4 speed "sticks" BUT I thoughly enjoy the smooth effortless shifting of my Automatic. And if I feel a need to go thru the gears manually (up or down) I have the paddles. I did NOT buy this car to race. If I did I would have the Mn6. Like I said earlier ....this is just MY opinion.
I drove stick shift for almost 50 years: three on the floor, three on the tree, four on the floor, four on the column, five speeds, six speeds - sedans, sports, GT, race cars. I'm in an A6 and love it.
