I have read here that as of 2008 AO was not a tint coat thus it's lower price now. On my GM sticker it reads as tint coat and in recent posts of upcoming 2009 colors it shows as a tint coat.

Anyone know for sure?

I have an early 08 - built in July.
I was thinking that they might have been using up the tintcoat that they had in stock, and that cars built later would have a standard clearcoat.

Regardless, I've had mine next to an 07.
I can't tell the difference.

The reason for the change in price as of '08 is that it went from a Tintcoat to a Premium Paint. Thus, the reduction in cost to the buyer.

No, it's not. Not to my knowledge. CR, JSB and VY are the 3 "tintcoat" colors (and list for $750 extra) for '08. AO is a premium paint (and lists for $300).

AO was, however, a tintcoat in '07. At the very beginning of the model year, there was "controversy" re did the '07 tintcoat look better than, more shade-shifting than the '08 premium AO? The answer is, no, no change at all.

I have an 08 and it is not tintcoat. I paid $350 for Premium paint not $750 for tintcoat. I can't tell the difference. AORoads answered your question. I have read that 09 AO is tintcoat. Not sure if this is corect or not.

2008 Atomic Orange is not a tint coat color. The paint shop is limited in how many tintcoat colors they can have. Currently this limit is three and they are taken by CR, JSB and VY. The 2007 and 2006 AO was a tint coat. The AO paint for 2008 spent a fair amount of time in development to make the color a conventional (non-tintcoat) color with a normal clear. The match to the previous year AO is fantastic. 2009 AO should not be a tint coat either.

07 is tint coat $750 more 08 is not tint coat$350 more! 09 will be tint coat! tint coat is higher price' it shines more and stone chips don"t show as bad". also has a longer lasting finish! corvette factory has more tint coats ava. than any other automobile producer?

What's the physical difference between a tintcoat and premium paint?

I would venture to guess that a tintcoat relies on a tinted (colored) clearcoat which goes over the paint whereas a premium paint is just that and uses a conventional (not colored) clear on top of it.

I've seen a lot of AO vette pictures and they all pretty much look the same. Maybe GM just screwed up for one year and gave us a $750 paint job for $300.

Out of the tintcoat colors that I have seen, JSB was the most obvious. The color shifting was more prenounced since the clearcoat is tinted. With Velocity Yellow Tintcoat and Atomic Orange Tintcoat, I could not tell.

on a placard at the KC autoshow, it said Atomic Orange Tintcoat, and was on the same swatch as all the other 08 colors. Reasoning?

My 08 says tintcoat also but it is not! Why I don't know.

I looked at my window sticker and manifest and no mention of tincoat. Mine just says Atomic Orange Metallic.

Your sticker says Tintcoat? I'd really be very surprised if that were the case. If so it means that your sticker was printed before the change was made in the system.

2008 Atomic Orange is not a tintcoat paint. It is a clearcoated metallic.

I believe mine does, too, iirc. But what's printed and what's painted are 2 different things, or can be.
