My wife was driving our C6 and she heard a "snap" as she was using the clutch. She said everything seemed to be fine but when she got home I found a broken spring on the drivers side floor. It must have fallen out from under the dash somewhere. It's about 1.5 inches in diameter. I havnt been under there yet but I wonder if anyone knows what might have happened here.
It sounds like you (she) broke the clutch return spring. It has happened to a few members. It is a pretty easy and cheap replacement. Some have just left it off and some have swapped it with the C5 spring for a slightly better feel.
There is only one clutch spring, and it does both and the reason most people hate the C6 spring. It makes the clutch pedal pressure very uneven. For the first half of travel, the spring is being load and requires more pressure on the cluck pedal to push it in, and then because of the geometry, the spring reverses on itself and then pulls the clutch back for the last quarter. The result is that when almost out, it pushes the clutch pedal up (a return spring), but when the clutch is almost to floor it helps pull keep the pedal in (assist spring). I replaced mine with a C5 spring and I love it. The cheapest (I think it was $6 from Gene) and best mod I've done to the car. The clutch pressure is much more linear because the C5 spring is much smaller. It still pushes the clutch pedal when almost all the way out, and offers much less "assist" when the pedal is all the way in. The only time I miss the old C6 spring is when I'm stuck in city traffic.
Appreciate the feedback and the link to the thread. Drove the car today and it was fine. In fact I liked the way the clutch felt without the spring. I'll probably replace it just to be on the safe side.
Does anyone know if you just pop the spring on or is it more involved?
Thanks,
Tom
