I Need Help With Speedometer Problem

I am trying to help my 85 year old aunt. She has a '97 Buick LeSabre with about 45k miles on it. She is having sporadic problems with the speedometer. Sometimes it works and at other times it does nothing. My personal diagnosis without looking at it would be that there is a speed sensor on maybe the front axle that is not working right.
Is there anyone on here that can help me figure out how to fix my aunt's car? She is a widow and doesn't have the hundreds of dollars it would probably take if she had to take it to a dealer.
PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME FOR BEING IN THE WRONG SECTION BECAUSE I HAVE ALREADY TRIED THAT WITH NO RESULTS! (I know that many highly skilled people are on this section of the forum that probably never even look at that other section.)
Is there a speed sensor on that model car and where exactly would it be located?
Once I locate it, how do I check it to determine if it is defective?
How difficult is it to R & R said sensor?
Please help me help a senior citizen in need!
Thanks!
