Is it possible as a practical matter to remove that damn black box on the passenger side of the window next to the rear view mirror? If I understand correctly, it is the OnStar box.

Hmm. I really don't know. You can rest assured that even if you do get it off you won't likely be able to get whatever adhesive residue is left behind. That box is on there, and I don't know of anyone that has removed it. You are correct, it is the Onstar. The XM antenna (if equipped) is in the side mirror and the radio diversity antenna is in the rear fascia as I recall.
Well, it's gotta come off it it can be trasnferred to a new windshield when a replacement is put in . . .but Paul's probably (well . . usually) right . . .the residue would probably look worse than the box . .
True for 2006 and later. 2005s have the beautiful "wart" antenna...
The On Star antenna is just that and only that. I've heard the the box just slides off to the right but I tried it and it didn't budge, I didn't want to muscle it and break something.
According to the service manual, THE WINDSHIELD BOX IS THE COMBO ONSTAR/NAV ANTENNA To remove, 1st remove the windshield upper garnish moulding to get access to the antenna wire then slide the unit towards the passenger door to remove it from the bracket (that appears to be glued to the windshield) unplug the antenna wire and replace the moulding. Good luck removing the bracket!
The vehicle communications unit itself (VCIM) is in the passenger side storage cubby under the carpet towards the front.
My bet is that removing either will throw codes. If you just want to disable onstar, I'd try pulling the fuse on the lower left of the fuse block under the passenger foot board.
From what I read, the fuse wont shut it down. I have the link to it but am not sure if I can post it here. If you would like it, pm me, it is about 22 pages of info on removing onstar, not the box itself but the service, it may have info on the box too, not sure.

Just for clarification. While it is called an ONSTAR/Nav antenna it is not the antenna for the cars that have the OEM GPS navigation unit. The nav that they are referring to is for Onstar. This enables the turn by turn directions that you can get via Onstar as well as the vehicle locator in the event of an accident. Removing it will not disrupt factory navigation.

If you want to disable it, you can find the instructions here:
I don’t like the idea of “Big Daddy” watching my every move, using the pretence that they are “looking out for my best interest”. I’m from the old school. I can keep track of my own minor services, tire pressure, how fast I’m going etc. I was without a cell phone most of my life; I don’t need one attached to my car. I have a cell and I like the idea of taking it out of the car when I get out.
This OnStar thing seems so “let’s put a chip under the back of your neck”, “the government is here to help you”, “don’t worry it’s for your best interest”.
How stupid are we, paying big dollars for a service that is used to keep track of your movements.
I made a big mistake activating this thing and I’m going to disconnect as soon as possible!
