I just did an 800 mile trip to Ft. Lauderdale, FL and used my soft sided carry on (under the seat) roller case. Plus a small duffel bag. I don't even have hard sided luggage anymore...

I bought one of those squarish duffel bags. One was at the Walmart, folds up into about 2" thick by 10x10. Folds out to big and squishy. Has about 10 pockets, and a couple main compartments. All told, under $10. (if you can't find it, email me; I still have the cardboard thing that lists the sku #).
I used one of those, and another soft sided 3 pocket suitcase, I think it's a 20" suitcase. Even stuck a laptop in between. Works well.
