Me, too. Started working on cars in high school after reading Hot Rod magazine for several years. Built my first hot rod in the '60s (a '52 MG TD with a 289 Ford V8). After 50+ years of working on, reading about, and enjoying cars, I've learned enough to be dangerous.
I also worked in a 'service station' (back when they were, in fact, about the service) while going to school. Got to do many jobs on other people's cars. Too bad that option isn't open to us any more.
As someone stated on the 1st page the higher the gear ratio you go the lower your topend (MPH) will be. So lets say you have the 2.56 gears in your rear end. You will have a slower acceleration than if you had 2.73 gears but a lesser top speed.
For example... (not real facts but just an observation)
2.56 gears 0-60 mph lets say 4.4 secs with a top speed of 199 MPH
2.73 gears 0-60 mph lets say 4.1 secs with a top speed of 196 MPH
3.15 gears 0-60 mph lets say 3.7 secs with a top speed of 194 MPH.
The higher you go with gears the faster accel you go but with a lower top speed.
The lower gear you go the slower you accel and the higher your top speed.
If you like to go fast and dont really care for gas go with some 3.15's. If you think thats too much drop it down to 2.73's.
Im running 3.73's in my car thats and 4 Speed automatic with a 3200 RPM stall convertor. (basically a stall convertor is just a sling shot for us automatics) but as i dont own a vette yet, i own a built camaro. Im still saving for my 08 which ill have by the end of this year.
The Corvette Forum is an excellent resource...I learn new things here almost daily. There are many sources of information...other people, books, the Internet, etc...exploit them all. For pure Corvette information you can't do much better than this forum. It's a great place to learn about your car.
Hang in there, you're heads gonna fill up fast. 99% of the folks here are helpful and generous with their knowledge and time. The other 1% you have to take with a grain of salt. My interest started about 1965 and at my age, I've forgotten more than I remember!
Sometimes my mind wanders from a serious thought and I'll...oh look, a kitty cat outside...be distracted for a moment but you'll catch on quick.
Got my first car when I was 12. Took it apart and put it back together several times before I got it right. 33 years and over 50 cars later I still love tinkering with them.

Jack up your Vette and you can read it, is on the differential housing...as far a learning, Barns&Nobel, spend an hour or so a day in the auto section, no need to buy anything.

You have either 2.56 or 2.73 gears with the A6. 2.56 if no option, 2.73 if Z51 OR the separate 2.73 option.
