I have been researching ways to solve the occasional drone, most noticeable at freeway speeds, from my American Thunder Flowmaster system. I have the quad tip design and saw that the Flowmaster tips are larger than the OE and do not have the drilled resonator holes.
I had the OE tips removed and they left around 2 1/2 extended inches. I then had a muffler shop cut off the Flowmaster tips at the very end of the muffler. The shop then set the OE tips extension "inside" the opening and arc welded them in place.
This resulted in a "slightly" smaller exit with the resonator feature. The system now looks stock, still has a great sound at acceleration and most importantly has all but eliminated the drone.
I now can refocus on the road noise from my Goodyear's while enjoying the sub-standard performance of my Bose, without that distracting drone
I want/need something that works also, I'm going to buy the C6 insulation kit from exotic vette next week, but would also like something else; maybe with both the drone will be completely gone?
I was out of town when I had the work done. We gathered for the Mothers Day weekend and I found a shop that agreed to do the work early on Saturday.
While he was doing the job I wished I had my digital camera to show the steps.
All I can say is, from the rear it looks completely stock. The "art" was his ability to set the smaller OE tips inside the muffler opening and then sealing them with the weld.

That's too bad, I wish you had gotten some pics in progress. How about some pics after the install?
I am still in the Bay Area and will return home tomorrow. I will then post some pictures that will better demonstrate what was done. I am still enjoying the measurable difference in the lack of drone.
There is no difference in HP, not that I would be able to tell. The OE Flowmaster tips are comparatively larger than the stock tips, I guess you could liken this to a musical instrument. The larger the opening, the deeper the sound, which in fact adds to the drone syndrome.
