I saw a post in this section once where a guy tinted his lenses a light blue. If you darken the lenses, wouldn't you diminish the amount of light projecting foward?

I am going to have my graphic design student daughter black out the background of my headlights to see what it looks like on my VY car. If it looks cool, one option would be to replace them with the black ones. At least having her photoshop it won't cost me anything but a few hugs.

If you tint, the light output will be reduced, and is illegal in most states. If you change to black, it will cost about two grand. Looks good though:

I had some smoked ones... but later changed them because I thought they were too dark...
Before...
After...
Someday I'll buy some black ones to replace these...

I wanted black headlights too, but was put off by the high cost, and major disassembly of the car that is needed to swap the headlights out.
So, as an experiment, I went with some LIGHT-smoked tint, bought off eb*y for about $30. It's not the same as black housings, but its still distinctive, and makes for a good look.
I know some people have had trouble with headlight tint, but its my theory that the trouble stems from: 1) the tint being too dark, blocking too much light causing internal heat buildup, and 2) applying too much heat when installing/shrinking the tint onto the lens.
I've had it on for almost a year and 12,000 miles... no problems so far. I do a lot of night driving, and the headlight output is still excellent.
Black headlights are still cool too, I'm just suggesting a very easy and low-cost alternative.
Cheers,
Kent
