I am just wondering on the C6 what body parts can easily be replaced? Say a fender bender happens can the fender be replaced easily by a body shop or does it get into filling in fiberglass and repainting the damaged pieces? What about a door deep gouge? I read about skin replacements etc. What does this mean and is this process relatively inexpensive?
When I bought my 05, C6 I pictured a car with thick fiberglass on large pieces like the older Vettes. I asked the seller about door ding problems and he banged his fist against the door to show me how the door is like plastic with a lot of give.
I hope the answere is the parts are light and plastic in nature but am not aware of the details of the build.

The fender panel on my '06 appeared to be about 1/8" thick (I looked at where it cracked). It absorbed the impact of a 200# deer at full run. There was very little damage underneath the skin and there was no damage to the hood of the car. The passenger side mirror was ejected from its mounting holes and there was deer hair between the mirror pedestal and the door panel. Although there was no significant damage visible on the outside of the door, internal inspection revealed a crack on the inside that necessitated replacement of the door. The deer was killed instantly (broken neck). My comprehensive claim was for a little more than $4K.
So if you trash a fender or rear panel are these parts just replaced by new pieces or are the more hard or solid body type parts (fenders, rear body panels) repaired by filling and glassing?
It would be nice if all the car body pieces can just be ordered, painted and bolted on.
The only reason I'm asking is where I live sh*&^ happens all the time and repairs are common. Animal hits, high wind lifting small gravel is common, hail etc.

Im in my summer home Montana.
The front fenders and rear quarter panels, hood, hatch, roof panel, front bumper, rear fascia and "B" pillar cover can all be ordered from any GM dealer. They will need to be painted but all should be a direct bolt on replacement. The door sills and lower rocker panels are bonded to the car as part of the assembly process and are much more difficult to replace. Most body shops will repair these parts rather than replace them.
The rest of the story however will likely be how your insurance company elects to handle the claim. If it is a small damage area it can be repaired properly and painted. You may find yourself needing to negotiate on the repair vs. the replacement.
The panels can be, and are, repaired. Depends on how severe the damage is and where it's located. And of course insurance companies dictate a lot of what happens. A person always has the option of ignoring the insurance company and pay the difference to get a new panel.

I wouldn't be banging anything against the doors to demonstrate anything. The doors and rear quarters are still a fiberglass type composite material just like the older vettes. They are not that flexible. The front fenders, however are a flexible material similar to the older Saturn cars' body panels. They can take a large impact without breaking.
Doesn't take long...door,rear quarter panel, front fender and frt facia already removed again from AB's in few hrs. Like Paul said, rocker panels are a different story!
