Default A6 "S" mode

I'm off to the track tomorrow for the first time with the 08 A6 coupe. I was out in a parking lot tonight praticing some take off's

What I'm wondering is that in "S" mode on hard acceletarion will it always take off in 2nd or will it down shift to 1st....or is the only way to take off in first is to drop the paddle shift into 1st ?

Thanks

It always starts in 2nd... when using the paddles. Eliminates the first gear bucking... You have to manually shift down to first.

I have been trying my 07 at the track/old runway and it seems to always land in second when I put it from auto to S mode. I find that to start in 1st I need to downshift to get it. I have been just starting in 2ond and seem to get a better start without that extra shift to 2nd.
Good luck this weekend.

The short answer to your question is "Yes". If you are in S mode and don't touch the paddles, when the car comes to a complete stop it drops all the way down to 1st gear. But if you touch those paddles, when the car comes to a stop, it only downshifts to 2nd and the only way to get down to 1st in "paddle mode" is to tug on the paddles one more time to force that last downshift. If it were me, I'd skip using the paddles in a 1/4 mile run and let the computer do the shifting. Stab and steer...

Good luck at the track tomorrow.

I can't tell you how long the S mode stays in first gear under hard acceleration. However, I can assure you that from a dead stop, if you've never used the paddles since you put the tranny in S mode, it will start in 1st gear.

The only time the tranny will start in 2nd gear is if you've used the paddles at any time since you put it in S mode. Then, to get it in 1st gear, you do have to use the paddles.

The procedure I use when starting the engine for the last time prior to a 1/4 mile pass is:
1. turn off the TC
2. reset the DIC to coolant temp
3. shift into S mode (do not touch the paddles)
4. roll thru the water box
5. clean/heat the tires 2-5 seconds in place
6. release brake and finish burnout as approaching the start line
7. stage
8. hold brake and pre-load to 1200-1500 rpm
9. release brake and quickly go to WOT on 3rd yellow
10. relax for about 12 seconds as you've got nothing else to do but keep it straight.

Works for me.

If you still have the stock stat, turn on the heater full blast to keep the temp down. Cycle the engine for 15 sec. every so often to circulate water if you get stuck waiting in the staging lanes. These engines don't play well when they're hot.

Good luck and have fun.

Wow! This is the best detailed info I have seen on racing with the A6 trans. Thanks my friend as it should help out with a lot of members.
