On a C6 manual, is there anyway to get the DIC the show what gear you are in? I had my GTO's DIC custom programmed to show each gear change and was wondering if anyone has done this for vettes?
This would be helpful because I just installed an MGW shifter and my wife is having difficulty finding reverse. I know she'll get used to it soon enough, but it would be nice to be able to get visual confirmation of which gear you are in.
Several new owners with a manual trans have asked this same question, including me, and the answer has always been no. I know it is not possible to do on your own with the present options/features of the car and I have never heard of a custom tunner being able to display that info either. Now what is odd is that with an automatic, I do believe that the gear selection does show up in the HUD. I guess whatever sensor is needed does not exist on the manual trans cars.
My guess would be then, if it does it for one car, it CAN do it for the other. I'm sure it's in the DIC, it's just a matter of figuring out how to activate it for a manual car. It's way above my abilities, but someone should be able to figure it out.
Chris White, a well known Pontiac and TBSS tuner figured it out for the GTO's. In fact, my A4 was the first auto car he ever tried the gear indicator on and it worked great. It actually showed the gear change a slip second before it actually changed. He also programmed the shift light to come on in case I wanted to do it manually. Unfortunately, the A4 was much slower to change manually than using the computer to do it. But it was neat to play with.
I appreciate the input. Maybe someday, someone will figure it out for vettes. Has anyone used that German digital shift **** (sorry, I forgot the name) that is supposed to learn the gears and display what gear you are in? It looks neat, but I'm skeptical about how well it works.
As I said above, I do not think the required sensor is on the manual trans to allow for this. The C6 has been out since 2005 and no one has figured out how to do it yet. Don't think it is possible.
I understand what you mean. Let me ask this then. Do scan devices like Autotap and Interceptor give the current gear with CAN? I know they do for OBDII. If so, then a signal is put out of the transmission somewhere. If I can't get on the DIC, then maybe I can use a scan gauge.
My only experience has been with automatics, so I'm not sure if current gear is one of the available parameters for scanners in manuals. I'm not disagreeing with you, just trying to explore possibilities.

Hey, no problem, I'm just trying to help. I have no experience with the scan devices you listed so I really can not comment. It does seem silly to me that this information is not displayed on the HUD. I would rather know what gear I am in than what darn radio station I just tunned to. I can look at the darn radio to figure that out! Of course, if you have stick shift experience, then you will know what gear you are in also. Keep digging, you might come up with something.
