Need hatch handle installation help.

I bought the hatch handle for my 08. The local Chevy parts dept said all that is required to install it was two 6mm X 19.45mm pan head screws with a 1 thread pitch. The diagram he printed out did not show any inserts behind the black plastic inner hatch cover. I looked in Vol. 1 of the service manuals and it does not give any instructions for getting the inner hatch cover off. Has anyone taken this piece off or done this installation of the handle?

The reinforcement/nuts have to be installed PRIOR to the hatch inner and outer being bonded together. It was part of the munufacturing process on earlier C6's.
