back when i got a launch c6 by miracle of God, it was a z51 but didnt have HUD. I called GM and asked. they told me that a completely different wiring harness exists for each option group there for the retrofit would be "impossible." well..nothing is impossible but they basically told me that it wasnt going to happen. now i went and traded for a z06 with HUD and solved my problem. goodluck.
I doubt you need another windshield as I have HUD and I tinted my entire windshield and it actually shows up better than before. I think it is just a reflection and thats it. I know it can be done, some others have done it here and apparently it isnt too difficult. Search it or I am sure some more informed people will help you. Good luck.

To answer the WINDSHIELD QUESTION, there is a special piece of material "sandwiched" between the layered safety glass. The purpose is to help reflect the display in bright light. The person on the forum that added the HUD said it showed almost as bright without the special windshield. Since its rare to turn the brightness up all the way you should be fine.
It is possible. While yes, the HUD cars have a special windshield it is not mission critical. The HUD glass has a small rectangle of reflective material sandwiched between the two pieces of safety glass. It is designed to enhance the brightness of the reflected hud image and provide a little clarity. The glass will reflect the HUD image and it is a 95% solution. People have been adding the HUD to Corvette since they came out with the C5. The C6 does require a new connector but there are a couple of places to get them.
Get in touch with forum member GMautotech, he has done it and he built his own connector harness.

I have a HUD on the way from Dennis. He was waiting on some plugs but just got an email that he has some HUDs ready to go. A little less than $800. No special windshield required. Now if I can just send the family off for a weekend so I won't have any interruptions.
Member spinedoc77 just did his vert a month or so ago. He used the service manuals, reported it wasn't a terrible job, just a couple small issues that weren't clear in the manuals. PM him, I'm sure he will offer insight.
