random question -- how far can you usually go after the "range low" comes on?
I have a 2008 Z06, and am just curious, how much fuel is left in the tank once that comes on the DIC.
In previous cars I usually had 25 or 30 miles before I was 'screwed'... when I'm filling up I know that when the nozzle clicks to auto shutoff the tank is 100% honest to god full. If i try to sneak another 75 cents in there it has overflown, which makes me thing that the vette (this is my first) is 100% business in terms of telling you levels of this or that. Makes me think that if the needle on the gas guage touches red - you are boned.
I think that when the DIC tells you 'range low' you still have another 20 miles or so, but don't hold me to that because I have never tested it. I have however heard that since the pumps are in the tank, they can overheat and fail if run consistently under low fuel conditions. Again, don't quote me on that, it's just something I've heard and/or read.....
I had it come on when I was on the highway, and there were no open gas stations for about 30 miles. When I finally filled up, I think it took about 17 gallons. I'm not sure how many gallons the tank holds, but I was cutting it close
I just hit this the other day. My "RANGE LOW" came on. 1 mile later, I filled the tank, and it took 15.5 gallons. C6 gas tank size is listed by GM as 18.0 gallons, so in my particular car, I've got about 2.5 gallons when the 'range low' message appears.
sooo... lets say we have 2 gallons left (just to be conservative) -- at 17 mpg (in town) that gives me 34 miles from the time I see "RANGE LOW" until I'm on the side of the road calling Chevrolet Roadside Assistance.
In 2 1/2 years I haven't seen that on my DIC. You dont want to run it that low. Fuel cools and lubricates the fuel pump and you dont want to suck up sediment in the bottom of the tanks.
