I have been reading link after link via a google search on the benefit or not of adding a small amount of Pure Acetone to a fill up. Now I'm certainly not ready to use this in my vette, but I am willing to give it a try in my Land Rover for a tank or two. From all I've been reading my biggest risk is the $.75 cents to add a couple onces to my tank. What do you guys think, snake oil or worth a shot? I'm not looking for opinions, more input that is fact based.

Here's one.

http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/acetone.asp

It's corrosive, so it eats away gaskets and O-rings. It will also eat away the paint on your car if you spill any of it.

Here's another.

Here's another.

How many do you want?

I've read the corrosive potential but diluted 4oz to 20 gals shouldn't have that effect at all. Not to put this in the same category but when it comes to ways to save fuel I don't think we get the full story, reminds me of who killed the electric car. Maybe I'll try it on the company car...

Also isn't Acetone one of the main ingredient in some fuel additives.

From Wikipedia.com:

Automotive fuel additive
Some automotive enthusiasts add acetone at around 1 part in 500 to their fuel, following claims of dramatic improvement in fuel economy and engine life.[3] This practice is controversial as the body of systematic testing shows that acetone has no measurable effect or may in fact reduce engine life by adversely affecting fuel system parts.[4][5][6] Debates on this subject and the perrenial claims of a "Big Oil" cover-up intensified when the practice was addressed on the popular American TV show MythBusters in 2006, and shown to have negative effect in the televised fuel economy test.[7].

Acetone is one of the "hottest" thinners you can buy. It is also one of the fastest to evaporate off. I think to add enough to do any good you would run the risk of seal damage, and yes, if you spill any on the paint it will eat into it very quickly.
