audio upgrade?
There's an amp in the base stereo, which puts out as much power as any in dash unit could (probably more).
To generate higher volumes you need more power and bigger/better speakers. If you just want mids and highs to go loud (think guitars and vocals), you could probably do it with the stock speaker locations. An amp and better speakers would do it.
But if you actually want the low end to play louder (drums, bass guitar, tuba, etc) the stock speakers and locations aren't really great for that. Adding the subwoofer in the back will reinforce the bottom end, and you could play the front speakers louder. Kind of like satellite speaker systems at home, with tiny speakers, and a big subwoofer.
It is the crappy Bose Amp and speakers.
I have the stock HU and adding quality amps, speakers and sub have made the difference.
The guys in the audio section have tested the stock HU and it has clean line level output.
You might want to think about moving your questions over there. These guys really know their stuff and really helped me out.
Good luck.
