I have had a handful of other "high end" cars without the clear bra and had no problems. I see a lot of folks here doing it and I am now in Texas which must have the MOST crap (debris, rocks, etc) on its roads in comparison with other states. Curious to hear what others are doing.
I did it right out of the dealership. It may affect someone that wants a 'show' car to win trophies.
But at the end of the day, when mine gets ratty looking (many years), dull and overly marked, I can just peel it away and have original unmolested paint. At no cost. Then if I decide, I can reinstall.
I drive mine on the open road, and get rocks, debris, and lots of bugs.
All that is protected by the clear shield. It is easier to remove the bugs as well.
I see little down side, other than cost. Which is far cheaper than a repaint.
This is the first vehicle that I have had the clear bra on (it was on my Vette when I bought it). I have to say, it is awesome. We get a lot of bugs in South Florida and now they are easy to clean off the car. Also, on my C5, the nose got chewed up by the pebbles, rocks, bugs, etc. Now, I don't have to worry about it. My C6 even has the clear bra covering the side view mirrors and where you put your hand in for the door handles. Now to add the pieces behind the front and rear wheels and I will have all of the armor I need for driving here in South Florida. I am thinking about having it put on my wife's 07 Dodge Daytona R/T to protect the paint!
I track my car, and that can be HELL on a paint job. I had the front bumper, 1/2 of the hood and fenders, headlights, rockers, mirrors AND an area behind all four wheels done and I am VERY glad I have it.
I just took a 1500 mile trip to OH and back. First, it is a lot easier removing the bugs but most important, after I washed the Vette, I could see if I looked hard in the reflection of flourecent light where the front was hit with gravel or small stones.
It didn't mark or tear the bra but it certainly prevented a ding in the paint. The point of impact has a very slight small blemish only seen in these circumstances that you would not even see unless I pointed it out to you. You cannot see anything in normal daylight no matter how hard you look. I was searching for any evidence because I heard a couple of the impacts which made me wince at the time.
I'm very pleased with my choice. It is VentureShield and has a lifetime warranty and can be removed at any time.
I got the entire package mirrors, rocker panels, hood, bumper. The best investment I've made on the Vette mods yet. This was after I had a GM bra installed @ the delear's on delivery. Some of us just don't research. My advice get it done.
I just picked up my Z06 from Quality Motorsports for a clear bra and tint.
Still letting it cure and settle, but it looks fantastic. This is my first ever clear bra and I'm very impressed. If you don't know what to look for you would never know its there.
I too am in texas and my black RX8 looked like the front was sandblasted after 50K miles on the road. My current car (Z06) is yellow so it won't look anywhere near as bad after that many miles
I have it on my 08 vette and wish I installed on my previous cars. BTW: I had Venture Shield installed entire hood, entire nose, headlights, foglights and behind each wheel arch.
A lot has to do where you live. If I were in an area that had a ton of bugs that can eat through the paint, I would probably put it on. But since I don't have that here, I would rather run without it.
My main complaint is no matter how good the installer is, you will always be able to detect that it is there and it will make the paint look a little duller since you are looking through the clear bra to see the paint. So far I have picked up only 3 small chips (in 28,000 miles) and after touch up paint you really have to look to see them.
I just had the nose, headlights, complete front fenders, and the full hood done on my new 2008 C6... and it looks awesome! It is basically undetectable, since the installer custom-covered the hood and fenders, wrapping all the edges underneath. This means NO VISIBLE LINES at all on the hood or fenders.
It cost me $1200, but I think it was well worth the cost to keep the paint on the entire front half of my car showroom-perfect forever. Another shop around here wanted $2200 to do the exact same job, so I actually think I got a pretty good deal.
Even if you don't get the full hood and fenders done, I would definitely recommend at least getting the partial kit... it is really a great investment and it works perfectly.
i've got a couple of blemishes on my clear bra and one on the headlight film that would be into the paint/plastic had it not been for the film. i'll never be without it again.
