It shifts at very low rpms, usually about 1400-1600 rpm. That's the whole reason for having the paddle shift. Put it in "S" and use the paddles. It won't upshift until you hit the paddle.

If you put it in "S" , you must hit a paddle to be in paddle mode. If you drive off in "S" without hitting a paddle , you will be in auto "sport" mode and not in "paddle " mode until you hit a paddle. I use paddle mode almost 100% of the time- love it-- and it will never shift before I want it-- comments here are usually that the A6 will not shift quick enough to suit some people.

I have an A6 with the paddles. I had it retuned to have the shift points to where they are more normal. Now the car is a beast with the paddles.

You control the shift points with the paddles.

In auto (D) ,the factory shift point are set more for fuel economy.

I always use my paddles and love it. No complaints here.

I do a lot of mountain driving where I use the paddle shift most of the time. It works great, blips the throttle to match revs, shifts as fast (or maybe faster) as I would with a manual in normal driving, and it holds a gear until I use the paddle to shift. I really like it.
