I happen to be looking at a 05 C6 coupe with 20K miles and when I test drove it, he explained the ticking sound was coming from the heat riser and said that there was a TSB on it. The sound was there at idle and never went away. He assured me that the problem would be taken care of by a Chevy dealership. When I did a search I couldn't find a TSB on the heat riser, my concern is, could there be a temporary fix for the ticking sound? I wouldn't want this to reappear after I take ownership. My research came up with possible pushrod problem although it's OK on the "crank pulley bolt" by the vin number.
Can the ticking be caused by the heat riser or other minor issues? Should I be concerned about any other issues specific to 05? BTW, I've read about the TSB on the colored tops. Last question, since I'm looking for an auto is it worth to move up to an 06 for the paddle shifters? I know the 08 (would be the way to go) have the down shifting rev matching as on my G35 which is really nice although it's not doable for me at this time.
The LS family of engines are noisey. Take off the coil pack covers (they're designed to acoustically dampen the valvetrain noise) and it really gets noisey. The intake manifold also dampens some noise, as it's plastic. What you are hearing may be the usual ticking associated with the valvetrain. Then again, it may not. If the car is still under warrenty, then you're covered. If the car is out of warrenty, I suggest taking it to a dealer and pay for a diagonises before buying it. Good luck.
I've got an '05 & standing outside the car, I can hear a "ticking" that's valve train noise.....but cannot be heard inside the car or once on the road. If what you're hearing is louder than that, needs to be checked out before you make a purchase.
Also check the torque on the Exhaust Manifold bolts... (manifold to head retaining bolts)
On my lo-mileage 05 I noticed this (inside) esp. around 1800-2K rpms - checked/retorqued
the manifold bolts and some were about 1/4 turn or so off spec (I think spec was 21ft/lbs but don't quote me on that)
- solved the problem. (BTW - there was no visible evidence of an exhaust leak)
Of course there's going to be some valvetrain (and sometimes injector I think) noise in these engines but torquing the manifold bolts solved the inside the car noise I was hearing.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll definitely have it checked before I make my final decision. I kinda focused on this one because it had every option I was looking, had the color, in addition he added the Baer rotors, painted calibers, ipod hookup, 08 C6 wheels, Borla Stinger exhaust, Billet grille, and it was in my price range.
"I felt the extra 2 gears in the 2006 up Auto was worth the wait".
Anyone else feel the same way that if you're going to buy an automatic an 06 or later is a must, not only for the 2 extra gears but for also for the paddle shifters? I can add the extra stuff but it's not realistic to change the transmission.
Thanks for all those that responded, it helps me in making the right decision.
