I was on my way to work and saw a Porsche behind me and noticed that we were about to overtake another Porsche. I wondered how they might recognize each other, so I watched in my mirror.
Neither of them looked at the other's car. I don't know if this is typical or not.
I noticed Porsche people don't generally acknowledge one another, although it is funny you mentioned it...the other day was the first time I got an actual "Corvette" style wave.
I noticed in PA every corvette owner waves. But then when I'm in Jersey or Ohio none of them waved at me. The only person the waved at my in Ohio was this police officer telling me to pull over.... damnit.
In my experience with Porsche drivers, they really don't know much about cars (this really applies to late model Porsche drivers, classic enthusiasts are another story). In many cases, I think they just buy them for the perceived status and sports car feel.
I Valet a couple nights a week on the side, and Boxster drivers are the WORST. They expect you to treat their cars like I would a Ferrari. One guy yelled at the other Valet for not leaving his Boxster right up front. I told him that he drives "The v6 Mustang of the Porsche world." lol
Anyway, I don't always get waves from Vette owners either. Bottom line: An enthusiast is an enthusiast, and we can expect good things from him or her. The guy or gal who just buys a Vette or Porsche or Viper or Ferrari just to have one...they're another story.
The Porsche tradition is to flash the headlights...normally once or twice. Sometimes a wave may be included with the flash. Of course, not all Porsche owners are dialed into the tradition...it's not like there is a test you have to pass before buying a Porsche.
How does one tell that the flash isn't to notify you that there is law enforcement around? Normally more than one car will flash, and normally it's more than just a couple of flashes from the car(s).

I have owned a couple of Porsches and the flashing of light thing was pretty cool. Very much like the wave.
Yes, it does seem that the P guys in general, do seem to think they are a little higher up the ladder. Of course, that's not true and I'll get waves occasionally from the ones that are more grounded. Kind of a "mutual respect" thing.
