A6 Shift Knob Removal
So I've done all the searches and found some good info and pictures, but I still don't get it.
Rotating the plastic piece at the top of the boot from 12 to 1 position is easy; works well. I've read to pull up on the shift ****, not to pull down on the plastic boot piece. I've pulled manual shift ***** off that were supposed to pull hard and they didn't pull this hard. I must be missing something.
I tried the car in neutral rather than park. A little better.
Should the button on the front of the **** be squeezed in?
Should I pop the top off the ****? Redline's instructions seemed to say this, but I didn't see that they did anything after that for it to make sense and none of the other instructions mentioned it.

I had the dealer replace the whole shift lever assembly, since they said it was glued on and couldn't be removed. A replacement shift lever assembly doesn't come with the **** on it, so - they could install the dsv shift **** on the new assembly, but not the old one.
They also said that the stock **** was inter-connected to the piece in the shift lever that keeps it in park, and "just pulling hard" like I showed them in the instructions I got on the forum would damage this connection/linkage.
I am just saying what my dealer told me.
I did get it installed though!:

Have a look at my website tech tips page. The very last link is a removal tutorial with pictures originally posted by forum member WHT. It gets to a level of detail that might get it done for you. It does come off and certainly be changed out. You do not need a new shifter. The **** is not glued on nor is the **** connected to the park lock. Yes, it is very difficult to remove and as instructed, considerable force may be required. Here is a link to my page:

I hope you have better luck than I did.

I did look at the more detailed photos at http://www.theredlion.us/C6%20A6%20S...20by%20WHT.pdf , and I still couldn't get it out, even with the help of someone else.
So I kinda "bit the bullet" and had the dealer do it their way. I agree that there had to have been a better way, but I didn't have the patience for it anymore.
Ames - please report back on if you are able to get it off... I won't feel stupid for paying to have it done if you do!
I figured since there was a chance I was going to be ordering a new one anyway I'd just go rip it off and if it broke it broke. I pulled pretty hard and it wasn't budging. I ended up putting it in neutral and it popped right off. Nothing broke either. I took it on/off a few times.
I had read that pdf and it was exactly right on about pulling up the **** rather pulling down on the plastic part. I think neutral was key for me.
Thanks everyone.

I don’t want to highjack the thread, but I have a follow on question. Once you get the **** removed is there anything special you need to know about the shift indicator? Does it just pop off? How does the boot go around it? I got a new shift boot from DSV and it came with no instructions
Thanks, Steve
