After the last car wash, I noticed a small bubble in the tire side wall, just inside of the tire rim rubber that sticks out. The local Goodyear wants $330 to relace it with 5/32 of 9/32 of tire wear left. I think I'll wait to wear them out before I buy just 1 tire.
Not necessarily - Hitting potholes will cause this type of damage too - and it's much more likely that it happened because of some road hazard than a true manufacturing defect.
That being said, I would think it's covered by the road hazard warranty on the tires... but depending on age/milage, they might prorate the amount you get. Is the $330 the prorated price?
[just saw your response. If $330's the prorated price, they must be charging you full price for the replacement? Seems kind of steep.]
The bubble is a defect. But, if you do as you said. I can just about guarantee you it will blow.
Incorrect!
As stated above it was most likely from hitting a pothole. The impact damages the inside of the tire causing the air to escape to the outside layer of the tire.
This is something that needs to be immediately addressed and should be covered under a road hazard warranty.
The tire price was a goofy $550 on sale for $450 & prorated to $330 for my tire wear. These are EMT super car Goodyear tires.
Tire Rack has them for $407 and Discount Tire $443 so the $450 isn't completely out of line. I had the same thing happen to me and they were replaced under pro-rated warranty. Get it done, it will blow out at some time.
Happens because you hit a bad pothole or something on the road. Had it happen to me on an almost brand new tire, Tough luck. Rode on it for about 200 miles probably, then got it replaced. Recommend you get yours replaced too, I know i drove on it for a while but it really is a safety issue.
The tire is more noisy than b4. The bubble is more round than oval. It is about 1 1/2 inch from the wheel. Will the EMT factor keep the sidewall up if it gets worse?
Reality Check: You're driving a reasonably expensive car that has the capability of going darn near 200 MPH and you're hesitating on spending $330 for an item directly related to safe driving?
I actually just noticed that you said you still have the run-flats. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isnt he ok in this case as long as he isnt planning on going really fast speeds? If it pops then shouldnt he have nothing to worry about.... I had low profile tires, so different story.
