Many great ideas here!
Definitely use soft suitcases and in them you pack only the things you need everynite like toiletries, bed room slippers, etc. Use gallon size zip lock bags to pack your daily underwear and shorts and tee shirts. You can tuck these daily-use zip lock bags in all the little nooks and cranies. Each day when you arrive at your destination and open the trunk just grab a daily zip lock and stick it in your suitcase and carry into your motel room. Also daily as you remove dirty clothes they can be packed into the used ziplock bag or placed in a small mesh zip up bag that can be tucked back into one of the nooks.
When I used to travel in my C4 I stored my tools in the area below the headlights under the hood. I just wrapped a rag around them and placed in ziplock bag.

First aid kit, duct tape, quick detailer, paper and mf towels,camera, phone and Onstar subscription, water, snacks, laptop to email,maps and NAV, regular and sun glasses, sunscreen, RXs, tire gauge, inflator, AAA membership,tool kit(wrenches and screw drivers),2 credit cards, Glock, flashlights, batteries, mp3 player,CDs(driving music), good reading material, maps, driver's license, small change, insurance card and I know there must be something else and someone will tell you.

Keep it simple. Bring 5x more money than you think you need and you'll never have to worry about having enough.
In 5000 miles you can buy some of the bulky items like a qt of oil or excess rags, etc.
