Default windshield stress crack

I just developed a 3 inch long perfectly straight crack directly above the registration sticker. There are no stone marks and it goes underneath the molding.

I imagine that it is a stress crack and therefore under warranty on an 08?
It looks like it is fairly complicated to replace the windshield...is this a dealer repair or is there a better place in the New Jersey area?

thanks.

Generally the dealers will call in a glass shop to remove and replace the windshield. You should be getting a genuine GM windshield though.

If you have HUD, be sure the right windshield is installed. I understand the HUD version is more expensive.

sorry to hear that ~ after your windsheild is replaced BEFORE you leave the dealership, make sure you check your rear view mirror ~ more often than not, when removing/reinstalling the mirror, the cam-lock devise that hold the mirror in place, is damaged and you'll find when driving your car, the mirror will have deveolped a wiggle that will drive you crazy. GM's cam-lock design is in need of improvement...just a heads-up. Good luck with your repairs.

I'm skeptical that it can be a "stress crack" . . .that would infer significant body flex and torque twisting the frame of the car. Not to say it couldn't happen, but it's certainly not an issue raised with any degree of frequency here on the forum.

I'd guess that there was some type of impact from an external force . . .check your policy - -most insurance plans include glass protection and especially if it's a HUD equipped piece, it's expensive!

Good luck -

thanks for all the good advice....the reason I think stress crack is that it started under the molding and there is no damage of any kind to molding area or windshield...I would obviously prefer warranty to insurance even with glass coverage.

Similiar have been found, stated on other past posts. Could be from the new car prep (razor knife, etc.) at the dealership, that's just now showing up. BTW, if a windshield has to be replaced, is there any problems of leaking, etc.???

I've had to replace several windshields in my work trucks and vans over the years. I've had 2 leak undetected and rust out the window frame, so that is always a possibility.

Man! Way, way back I had to replace a windshield on a Olds and it leaked badly after that. Was just wondering if things have changed.

The install can leak. If the installer is a good one you should have no problem. I had a windshield replaced on my 98 Camero and had no problems.

I did it through insurance and drove it to the installers shop and got the manager of the shop to do the work.

THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE the same exact thing happened to me Yesterday.
I was not even driving the car, I was standing next to it and I actually heard it crack, No impact,No chip, nothing.
It starts right under the molding above the registration sticker.
Mine is an 07 Z06 .
Keep me posted on your outcome and I will do the same.
Good luck to both of us.

Do the "Pen Test" before you go...Run a ballpoint pen along the crack. if it catches at all it generally indicates an impact point. Many Manufacturers use this technique to separate a stress crack form an impact one..

Just returned for the dealer...no issues at all getting it under warranty...ordered it from GM using the vin number which should eliminate the HUD issue, but I had him note it anyway, as well as the rear view mirror (thanks for the tip).

BTW very impressed with Paramus Chevy service dept.

will the install do anything to the onstar phone etc housed in the mirror?

HUD windshield is a special one and is more expensive. If dealer does warranty it, check you auto policy, most cover this with no (or very low) deductible.

Mine cracked at 2K miles on a diagonal -- passenger side upper corner. Inside crack only, nothing on the outside. I'm inclined not to do anything with it because I am likely to be the only one to see it, and I am not sure I want to risk the chance of leaks for something so minor.
