If the steel rod idea doesn't appeal to you because of possibly damaging something when you lower the hatch (or the thoughts of getting harpooned by it in an accident) just string lead shot (Round fishing sinkers) on a nylon monofilimment line about 1/2 to 1" apart and fish it through the folded seam where the rod was inserted using a piece of wire. then reomve the wire.
It works the same and stays flexible so it wont damage anything but holds the flap down.

Gravity must work better for you than for me.
I tried your method and it took a LOT of shot on the string to stop the flapping, enough that the front of the cover would sag and the hatch would barely stay open. What's the secret?
BTW, I've seen enough strange things happen in accidents that the "rod" idea scares me silly.
I threaded a thin (I couldn't tell you the size) threaded rod into mine. I cut it about 1" short so there is 1/2" of fabric covering the end of the rod, so it shouldn't cause any scratches or anything. It really holds it down nicely. As for getting speared, it is in the bottom pocket/hem and would have to go through both seats SIDEWAYS to get to a human, so I see it as a non-issue. My $.02 says it is a "must do"!
I used an old 12Ga shotgun cleaning rod, solid alum and has been working well. Now have Vette Bin & Partition (just got today) so will have to see how that affects things with the top off.
