So I'm out for a cruise and decide to get on it a little bit. I have an 08 MN6 and I guess I got on it a little too much in 1st gear and the rev limiter kicked in . I immediately shifted to second and kept on going. I'm normally a pretty mellow driver but I just love 1st to second sometimes. Can I seriously damage the motor by doing this ? I guess my ego is hurt more than anything else....

More likely TM (torque management) than a rev limit point unless you went WOT. Regardless, a good tuner can accommodate you. Find a good local motorsports shop that specializes in Corvettes!
Hitting the rev limiter under a throttle condition is not a big deal. The limiter is there to avoid the overrev condition so you can't hurt the engine.
If however, you have mechanical overrev (downshift into a gear to low ) the limiter won't be able to stop the overrev condition and you could rev much higher since the transimission is forcing the revs and that could toast your engine.
I wound't make a habit out of hitting the limiter under throttle but in the end that is why it's there so you are fine.

Chevy put the limiter in just for such events, The engine limiter is actualy set a bit on the conservative side at 6500rpm , but thats what keeps the engine from hurting itself.
Lets just say I'm on the compulsive side of things and I don't want to hurt anything , so the rev limiter kicking in is a major event in my life. I'm just glad I didn't hurt anything.
Hitting the rev limiter cuts fuel which is what causes the performance hit and misfire sound you hear. Continuing to run the car in a rev limited mode with fuel starvation can in fact damage the engine. Hitting it once in a while and getting off it as soon as it happens is really no big deal.
You have gone past the performance peak of the car if you are bumping in to the rev limiter. Try to time your shifts for about 500 rpms sooner and avoid the limit and get better performance out of your car. Avoiding the rev limiter will make your first to second romps much more fun as it won't sound and feel so awful.
