Believe it works off mileage as well as engine specifics such as temp, etc that are captured by the ECM but that's a guess. PM Talon90 and he can give you the detailed answer.
How does the Oil % remaining work? Is it actually testing the oil or is it just theoretical based on # of miles and how the car is driven?
I just bought my coupe and it says 95% left but how do I know if someone just reset the DIC?? or is it actually sensing the oil quality?
It does not test the oil in any way. With that said it is extremely reliable if you know the time that the sensor was reset. You should consider changing the oil to start fresh and know exactly when it was changed.
The oil life monitor uses an algorithm which caluclates oil life based on ignition cycles, temperature and rpm's. It is a very proven, time tested system and it can be trusted but it can only be trusted when you know the starting point.

I agree.... I changed my oil and drove easy.. and it slowly went to 90* .. then I want to Englishtown Drag Raced it for 3 days (about 15 total passes on the 1/4 mile track) and it went down to 81*
The oil temp was 180 deg at the start of each run.. and never went over 190... but the RPM was over 6000 on every run...
Also I "THINK" the manual calls for 5.5 qts on oil & filter change, but I only put in 5 & prefer to run it down 1/2 qt...
But I only race it in a straight line for 1/4 mile, so its never oil starved.. I'd love to have the "Dry Sump Oil System" the the ZO6's have ...
That's what I thought but figured I'd ask the pros in this forum. Today I went to the service center at Sunnyvale Chevy and they were less than impressive when it came to warranty and service questions. I was underwhelmed.
