Default Need help please with 6 CD Changer Question

I just bought a 6-CD changer + xm ready factory Corvette radio to replace my single CD radio. The install looks bad enough by having to remove the entire front console to get to the radio. I also was reading that these radios are anti-theft and must be programed into the car computer before they will work. As I understand, the radio looks for the vin number that is programed into the radio. Do you know if I can re-program this myself or does the GM shop need to do this? Are special tools required for this job or can the average guy perform the upgrade?
Thanks for any input you guys can provide.
Frank

I would check with major companies in your area that install radio's... here in the Northwest it's Car Toys, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc... just in case you can't get an answer here on the forum... sorry I can't help...

Don't know the answer but I would post this in the Audio section. many of the regular posters have dealt with the C6.

Not much help here but radios with the theft lock usually require a dealer to reset them. That reduces their worth to a thief.

Yes, a dealer (or somebody with a Tech II) has to do it. As long as you can provide a decent receipt, most dealers will do it for a nominal charge ($20 or so, although some charge 1 hour - $85 - which is a rip).

Removal of the console area isn't that bad honestly. Remove the shift ****. There are only two 7mm bolts in the center console and two 7mm bolts behind the ebrake handle that must be removed. Once that is done you will need to pull the console out from the six clips that secure it to the dash. The worst part is removal of the electrical connections for the lighter, seat heaters (if you have them) and traction control.

As noted the radio head unit will need to be reset using a Tech II. Any GM dealer should be able to do it and it will take less than 30 minutes. Unfortunately unless you have a GM Tech II you won't be able to do it yourself.
