Default Programing a fob

I just purchased a 09 key fob over the weekend, and was wondering how to program it to a 2007.

I was told that you can put it in the slot in the glovebox and it gets programed by the system, is that true ? I really dont want to mess anything up, so any advice that can given would be great.

Thanks in advance.

There's a little more to it than just putting it in the slot in the glovebox.

Page 75 of the 2007 owner's manual.

To match a new transmitter to your vehicle when
you have a recognized transmitter (two recognized
transmitters are required for Canadian owners), do
the following:
1. The vehicle must be off.
2. Have the recognized and new, unrecognized
transmitters on your person.
3. Go to the rear of the vehicle and insert the
vehicle key into the key cylinder located
above the license plate. See Hatch/Trunk on
page 83 for more information on the key
cylinder.
4. Open the trunk.
5. Turn the key five times within five seconds.
7. Place the new, unrecognized transmitter in
the glove box transmitter pocket with the
buttons facing towards the passenger’s side.
8. Once the transmitter is programmed, a beep
will sound. The DIC will display READY
FOR #X, where X can be 3 or 4, or
MAX # FOBS LEARNED.
9. Press the Acc button (ignition switch).

Okay, here is a thread about programming fobs that seems to help others. The author says he's used it and it works. Note that it is the short procedure for programming any fob # except no. 1.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...98&postcount=7

Pictureman, follow this procedure exactly and if you have trouble with it, post here again, with an explanation of what step didn't work, if any.

Okay, I just realized the fob I have is #1. I hope that doesn't make a difference and now on top of that I misplaced the key.
Okay I'm battin a 1000.

I did contact the dealer and they can make one for $59.00. I dont think I need a key that bad, or should I get one ?

I'm going to run out and try to program it now I really hope it works.

Sorry, but you've confused me (not difficult to do some days ). Is the good fob you have a #1 or is the new fob you want to program a #1? Be aware that it doesn't matter what fob # is etched on the back of the new fob you want to program.

What makes a difference is whether or not you already have one good fob. If so, what fob # is it programmed as?

Now I'm getting stressed. I tried it a few times and once again nothing Could it be because it's fob #1 ?

I put the fob I use which is fob #1 on the console.
I popped open the hatch and turned the key 5x within 5 Seconds.

( I did not see any message on the DIC )
So I tried it again, and still no message.

I then closed the hatch and went through all the steps again but this time after turning the key 5x I put the fob in the slot with the buttons facing the pass side and still nothing.

Okay is it me or is there something I'm missing? Now does it matter I'm useing fob #1 with a fob #1
or should I try my fob # 2 ?
I really want to thank everyone for their help. I surely hope people arn't thinking -

Your last post seems to indicate you already have a fob #1 and a fob #2 programmed for your car. If so, when you try to program this new fob, it doesn't matter what number it's got on the back of the fob, the car should be smart enough to program it as fob #3.

However, keep in mind that if what I've said above is correct and you do want to program it as a fob #3, all you can use it for is to start the car. No memory options can be used with it.

Note that you cannot have 2 fobs programmed with the same fob #.

At this point, my only other suggestion is to spend the money, go to the dealer, and have him program it.

The number ("1" or "2") on the back of the fob means nothing. Internally, all fobs are the same.

I had this same problem... car wouldn't go into fob learn mode (no message on DIC). Here's what works for me:

1) Put metal key in key cylinder back by license plate. Dont turn it yet, just leave it in there for now.
2) Put old, already-programmed-and-working fob in center console cupholder
3) Turn car 'on' using start button (you dont have to start it -- doesnt matter), then press start button again to turn car OFF.
4) Immediately run (yes, RUN) to the back of the car and turn the key five times. If you physically cant get back there very fast, have a helper ready to turn the key five times when you turn car off. This should trigger the "FOB" message on DIC.
5) Carry out the rest of the fob learning procedure as normal.

This is the ONLY way my car will go into "fob learn mode". If I wait even 5-7 seconds between steps 3 and 4, my car will never go into fob learn mode, no matter how hard or fast I turn the key.

MAke sure you don't have a working FOB anywhere near the car when you are going through the procedure.

Default Programing a fob

I was under the impression that it's the car that has the memory, hence it gets "programmed" and not the fob.

Correct... the car learns and registers/stores the fobs identity during the procedure. Nothing about the car is stored in the fob.

Put another way, the car "knows" the fob, but the fob knows nothing about which cars it may be registered to.

You are all a great help I did finely get it programed about 30 minutes ago.

I followed what you said Kent1999 and it worked right away

Now as for it working the memory seats it does not, but it does open the hatch and start the car. Hopefully I can get it to do the seats somehow I might have to disable fob #2 if there's a way

Lastly when I did program it I missed hitting the acc button and tapped it on fob #4, but no big deal. I don't want to be that OCD at least not rihgt now. ( It's only a matter of time )

My next step is to get my replacement key $59.00

I'm pretty sure I read (somewhere) that fob #3 memory positions can be accessed by pressing both the 1 and 2 buttons simultaneously on my '06 'vert. Food for thought . . .

1. Have both key fobs.
2. open trunk with key then turn 5 times in 5 sec.
3. open door and insert old key fob into slot in glove box with buttons facing pass. door.
4.once that fob is reconized do the same with new fob.
5. press acc. switch and you're done.

Okay as I wrote earlier I got it programed. It does everything it should do. but when I'm inside and I tap the options button it displays 'No options avalible' what's that about, any idea ?

I now tap the #1 button on the drivers door and the seat moves up and all my options are there even when I turn the engine off the seat moves back and so on. When I get out of the car and shut the door the alarm sets itself.

All this happens ONLY when I tap the #1..What can I do to make things work with all my options there with my New 09 Fob ?

Thanks for everyones help, advice and input.

The new fob you have programmed the car to recognize is either a #3 fob or a #4 fob, as far as the car is concerned. Those fob numbers do not have memory options. However, an earlier post in this thread mentioned pushing both the no. 1 button on the door and the no. 2 button on the door to get a #3. You might try that, but I'm doubtful.

From other information you've posted here, there don't seem to be any memory options stored for fob #2. As an experiment, try storing some memory options (seat position, radio presets, mirror settings) with the no. 2 button on the door (press & hold the no. 2 button until 2 beeps are heard). Then see if you can invoke those memory options by pressing the no. 2 button (only press and release, don't hold it) when you've got either the #2 fob in the car or when you've got only the #3 fob in the car.

I do have a fob #2 which I never use. When I was programing the new fob it programed as fob #4.

So on that note could I still push the 1 and 2 buttons on the door even though it's fob #4 ?

I just don't want to mess anything up, that's why I'm asking.

Thanks
