Bought a little 93 octane for the C6 this morning. So does this give a knock in the head to the theory that "big oil" controls gas prices or is it really supply and demand?
People will believe what they want. Of course big oil can influence, as can any other company out there. However, they can only do that to a certain extent unless it is a true monopoly and they are completely unregulated.

I paid 3.15 for regular this morning in Houston.
By the way, you think the demand for gas and oil has suddenly "dropped" by 40 percent? Do you know one single person that is using 40% less gas now than a year ago?
Truth is oil prices are not controlled by oil companies or supply and demand.

Easy speculation seems to have the biggest effect on pricing. No way has demand or supply fluctuated to the degree that would cause these wild price swings.

Amen. This is what I alluded to in the post above yours.
Got Sunoco 94 for $3.21. I haven't seen 94 for a while.
I haven't seen sunoco 94 in decades... there used to be no sunocos west of the mississippi. at least none in texas! do they still carry the GT plus 100 octane right at the pump? and do the pumps still have that rotary dial on them?

There is not a straight line relationship between supply/demand and prices. There is a concept known as "price elasticity" which suggests some prices will go up/down faster in response to supply/demand changes than others.
Truth is, IMHO, that gas and oil prices are influenced by supply, demand, oil companies, OPEC, speculators, market psychology, refinery capacity (and I've probably missed some).
At this point, I'm beginning to think there is no longer a connection between the oil barrel price and gasoline price.
Here in Cary, North Carolina, 93 octane is still $3.99 per gallon, and that is not a typo.
How can oil only be $80 per barrel, and gasoline prices haven't budged downward hardly at all here.
I go to the pump and there is always gas, so no shortages, just high prices, do we just drive more than anyone else in the country?
My understanding is that the problems in your part of the country started with the last hurricane which reduced refinery capacity. If those refineries are still not up to full speed the higher prices serve to keep demand down to match the reduced gasoline supply from those refineries. Also, I'm sure the oil companies/refineries and retailers would be milking this as long as possible to maximize profits.

I know what they're saying, but apparently as you say they're milking it for all its worth because as I said, we have had no shortages, and there has always been gasoline around here.
We just pay much higher prices than the rest of the country right now.
Does it really make sense for it to be fully a dollar a gallon more here in Cary, NC than it is in Texas where the hurricane hit?\
Also, I thought Georgia was where the shortages were, our prices are higher, what gives?
In central NC, we STILL do not have gas at many gas stations. Most have regular unleaded but most do NOT have mid grade or premium. What a phuckin racket.
