First I've heard of one of these - custom job though. One of the pro athletes in Dallas area bought a new Z06 and had it turned into a convertible. Sweeeeeeeet.
Why doesn't Chev do this anyway? Is it a safety issue?
I'm no expert on it but I was told at the factory that because of the aluminum frame the Z06 requires the fixed roof to prevent frame flex and also includes the roll bar. Its designed for some pretty high speed track work.

My customer did one at the end of last year. I supplied every Z06 part for the conversion. It was expensive, but looks totally factory, including seat covers.
That is why or so they say. Other makers are able to get this done, but perhaps it is an expensive problem. I have been assuming that it is a bit of a purist problem at Chevy.

GM could do it, but not with the lightweight frame. Ever since the C5 Z06 came out, added horsepower AND outstanding handling was the most important goal of building the car. It is no secret that weight savings is one of the key components to achieving these goals.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion as to what they want in a car, but I think it's actually a pretty noble goal that GM set out to do with the Z06 - build a true, all around performance version of the car instead of just a Corvette with more horsepower.
