I heard that Tom Wallce (Vehicle Line Executive of Performance cars for GM) has announced his retirement effective Nov 1. Tom also played a major role in our beloved Corvettes, including the new ZR1.

Can anyone confirm this?
trying to do so.....not a good sign guys. Tom has been good for Corvette
BUT:
Just a week ago he said to the media: "there are changes, some neat stuff, coming for 2010 that I can't talk about yet."

Rick,
You might want to correct your blog. While he is the Vehicle Line Executive for Corvette, Tom is not the Chief Engineer for Corvette. Tadge Juechter is. He took over that post from Tom in 2006.
There was another thread on this last night.Where did that one go.11-1-08 he's done. Not a good omen for GM!!This guy just started not to long ago.
While he only just started with Team Corvette Tom has actually been a GM employee for 38 years starting in 1970. He came on board the Corvette team as VLE and Chief Engineer in 2006 and later that year elevated Tadge Juechter to the role of Chief Engineer while keeping the Vehicle Line Executive post.
These departures are really bad news. In addition to losing the abilities of the specific people, the departures show up as a vote of "no confidence" in GM's future.
When Dave Hill retired, I wondered if he was able to take his pension as a lump sum to avoid getting screwed if GM went Ch 11 and terminated the pension plans. Same question with these recent people.

GM is offering early retirement "Buyouts" to almost all salaried employees over a certain age to get their salaries off the books. The deal has to be complete by Oct. 31 and they must be gone on Nov. 1 in order to reap the benefits.
For some, it is an offer they can't refuse. I think Tom will find ways to keep himself busy, and make a little coin on the side.
Gary Claudio (marketing mgr) also announced his retirement.
Wishing you the very best on your retirement guys! Your contributions to GM and specifically, Corvette, will go in the history books.
Tony (aka Zippy)
Greetings Zippy,
I didn't know this is what you posted under here! Great to have you on the board here. I hadn't heard about Gary's announcement. At least his presence is left in good hands with Harlan. Gary had all ready made a move away from the pure Corvette program back to his roots with the racing program.
there has been enough talk about THAT to suggest it could be. Don't think that is the total answer right now.
Talking about the car itself, I want to see an auto Z06 with F55 available....thank-you Santa!
I wouldn't be at all surprised wth an auto z06 option becoming available, especially now that the ZR1 is now the "top of the line manual-only ultimate vette" offering.
Widebodies? Could be but, the vette team's gotten beat up in the press for the C6Z looking too much like the C6 coupe (vs some more body distinction like on the C5)..wouldn't surprise me, though.
I would not be shocked if you see a 20-25HP bump for the Z06 to 525 or so.
Or a carbon fiber roof panel option for the C6 coupe.
But I would really like Santa to upgrade the seats for the z06 if not the whole C6 line...PLEASE!
I met Tom this summer in the Corvette Coral at the Road America ALMS race. He is a great guy and will definitely be missed.
Hey what is this IPOD Pal deal?
