My car is supposed to be delivered tomorrow and my new wheels installed on Monday. The place that is doing the mounting/balancing told me that I shoudl let them laser align it as after riding on two trucks, it will need alignment. I've read a coupla posts on the subject and wonder if I should let them align it on Monday or drive it for a few hundred miles first?
I think it's possible that it could come from the factory out of alignment. But I don't see what riding on two trucks would have to do with it. How is that any different than sitting in your garage? Even if the truck bounces around a little it would be no different than hitting bumps in the road.
I've had my C6 for three years and haven't aligned it. However, I did replace the right front tire early when it started cupping (tire problem?) and today I'm going to the Firestone dealer to get it checked and probably aligned. The insides of both front tires are wearing faster than the outsides. I've heard that it's set up this way (maybe just on the Z51?) for better track performance. And though I've tracked the car a few times, I don't really need this so will see if I can get it changed for better wear. In any case, I'm switching the fronts to Firestone Wide Oval RFTs like on the back and they'll wear better anyway.
Don't know if this is brand new, or new to you, but it can't hurt to have an alignment to preserve the life of your (expensive) tires and make sure the handling is on. The question is not only where to get it done, but what specs to have it aligned to?
For that you'll need to do a search on alignments here on C6. And when you find the specs you want, you'll need to ask whatever place does it if they'll do it to spec, or just get it "within range". Within range is ok, but there could be almost-significant differences betw. wheel to wheel.
Brand new. The guy at the tire place says that strapping a car down on a truck causes the toe to change causing wear on the inside of the tires. Like I said,,I know corvettes are often out of alignment from the factory but also know that some settling as the car breaks in is normal. Just wasn't sure if I should do it now or wait till after break in.
I've had 3 new C6's and every one of them was out of alignment from the factory. The dealer won't do it until you have at least 500 miles on it first. Then they will do it and it will be covered under warranty. If you want to do it right away you will have to pay for it yourself. Good luck.
