Default 402vs427

Can someone go into detail the benefits of the 402 over the 427.You see alota guys going this route, but wouldn't the added cubes of the 427 yeild more power. Also is it safe to say that once you go over 400 your not a small block any longer.I know you have the 572 beast, but thats a whole other level. lastly is a forged 402 any stronger than a forged 427?

The 402 is a stroked ls2 while the 427 is the ls7.

I seldom read a post that befuddled me as totally as this one. I'm trying to figure out what this has to do with C6 general discussion.

Small block/big block refers to the size of the block not the displacement. Back when I was a hot rodder in gen one Camaros a 402 was a .30 over ( I think ) 396.

Uh, the 396 is a big block. I suppose you can get 402 out of a small block too but it would not be as strong block wise. There are 427 big blocks from the ooooooooold days. Then there is the 427 small block in the Z06 that make all the owners so proud to own a "big block" which it ain't.

You wouldn't by any chance have a Camaro would you?

No...LS6...I couldn't figure out the 402.Till I read the above post.I forgot that the LS2 is bigger than my LS6. So when stroked the LS2 hits the 408 mark.

A few forged engines. You can see exactly where the 402 comes from.

Wow, not sure where this comes from, but you're painting with a pretty broad brush. You really believe no Z06 owners know the current 427 is a small block?

I love my "427"! Small block....big block....doesn't matter. Owning this 427 SB just takes me back to the days of the 1960's and 70's when life seemed less complicated.

you can own a 427 ..small block motor or a 427 big block motor..but lets not go about calling the 427 small block a big block..cuz it aint.

Well, if we're going to be that way about it. The LS7 sure isn't a big block motor. No sir it is:

1. Much lighter and therefore handles much better.
2. Makes more horse power.
3. Is much more fuel efficient.

That's enough, I don't want to rub it in. BTW I owned a 1970 with the 454 so I know exactly what I am not missing.

I believe the 402 is a stroked LS1. The LS2 is a 402. These and the 427 LS7 are all small blocks.

Anyone that has droped a big block in place of a small block knows the difference.

In this context, the 402 is a bored (or honed) and stroked LS2.
Stock LS2 bore and stroke is 4.000" x 3.622" (364 c.i.d.).
The 402 bore and stroke is 4.030" x 4.000".
The 1970 big block 402 bore and stroke is 4.125" x 3.760".

The 427 LS7 bore and stroke is 4.125" x 4.000".
The 1965-1969 big block 427 bore and stroke is 4.251" x 3.760".

IMO, none of these engines can really be considered "Small Block Chevrolet" engines. THe only thing the LS engines share with the 1955 - 1996 small block is the dimension between the bore centers. All of the internals, and externals, are completely different.

Does anybody remember the S.B. 400's from the early 70's? I dropped one in my 63' SWC. I had the flywheel balanced and added a highrise manifold with an 850 dp on top of two humped 2.02 heads. That Vette really screamed. Nobody believed, that, the internals were stock. The power curve really came on at about 3K.

Isn't it the dimension between the bore centers that determines whether or not it is a small or big block?
