That's the infamous clutch spring - some replace it and others drive without it.

I put a C5 spring in mine. I like the clutch feel much better than with the C6 spring. Spring costs less than $7 and only takes a few minutes to install.---John

That is the clutch return spring. It is o.k. to drive without it. It is there for a reason and it is stated that driving without it for a length of time it can cause pre-mature wear of the clutch. With that said there are owners on the forum that have removed (or not replaced) it when it broke and have driven with it off for two or more years without problems. Some (as noted) have replaced it with the C5 return spring as they liked the feel better.

Mine fell off a year ago. I threw it away and never looked back.
