I have a 08 Z06, with about 3500 miles, I haven't changed the oil yet. I'm wondering if I'm due for an oil change. I was told by a local dealer to change it when the light hits about 20% and I'm at 40% i think.
Is it time for an oil change? Am I still in the safe zone?
I like to do the first change at 1000, then I do it at 50% on the DIC after that. There is machining debris from manufacture in the oil at that first change, that is why I do it then. Later, a longer interval is fine.
But this is a point of disagreement here on the forum...so this is just my opinion, others most certainly will disagree.

That machining debris can be trapped with a FilterMAG. I would put one on at delivery and keep it on throughout the life of the car. I would also use Amsoil at the first change.

Well, I disagree with your disagree - in other words I agree with the original suggestions to change sooner. It's the cheapest and best insurance you'll ever buy.

I change mine every 5000 miles but it's not a bad idea to do first change early
I would change the oil now and not wait--especially if it's your first oil change on the engine. I did my first change at 89% oil life and 900 miles. I'm very liberal with my oil changes (never more than 3,000 miles and use synthetic oil) regardless of what the DIC tells me is left to the oil life.
The first change is important and your engine will thank you.
I plan on changing mine at 1,000 miles then at between 50% - 60% on the DIC, that's how I have done it on my Tahoe and it has more miles then I care to admit and after 3,000 miles the oil still looks as good as the day it went it. Always worked for me so I'll keep a good thing going!
I personally do my first oil change on a new vehicle at about the 1000 mile mark, but then I've been taking the oil farther into the DIC that most of the above posters.

I agree with your disagrement of my disagrement..... or something like that
I also do mine at about 1000 or 1500 on a new car. On the woman's subaru I did a UOA on the first change at about 1700mi and it was unbelievable how much crap was in the oil. Molybdenum like woah and silica from the casting.
I did the first oil change a bit early at 6,500 miles on the clock and 50% on the oil life monitor. I let it go longer now, typically 8,500 miles and 25% oil life, or about 3 times a year. Of course mine is a daily driver, and makes several long trips a year. That's a whole lot easier on a car than one that sits most of its life.
If you drive your car hard and always heating oil to max temps change more often. If you do the speed limit, 0 - 60 accelleration at around 10 seconds. drive in the granny lane. you can probably get 10,000 miles with synthetic. But if you drive the vette like it is intended to 3-4,000 tops.
