I have been ringing the bell as a Salvation Army Volunteer for the last four years and found it to be verying gratifying. The smile on the small kids faces when you give them a candy cane, the surprise when someone steps up and makes a generous donation (when you would've bet they wouldn't be giving anything) and the folks that donate and say they were the recipient of Salvation Army assistance in the past.
10 years ago I wouldn't have considered doing this sort of thing. All I thought about was myself and my famlily. Things are different for me now and I'm sure the same is true for many of you. I know there's a lot of 50 something year old and older guys on this foum like myself and you come to realize that little things like this are some of the most rewarding moments of your life.

I don't see why I should contribute to your local Salvation Army unit, when I contribute to the one in my area. It is by far one of the best in the country, but by contributing a larger amount to your own, it can become a tax deductible contribution.
It is not much, but I am donating a dining room set and clothes next week local Ft Worth, TX. My mom told me when she was a kid, her family had no money that The Salvation Army came to there house one Christmas and gave her and her brothers Christmas presents. I guess when it touches home it makes you realize the true wonders and work that they do for people,.
