Media Bias
Rather than call him an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about, the auto industry needs to figure out how to get people like him and millions of buyers to trust that they have come a long way.
Looking at the way the execs handled themselves on the first trip to D.C., do you understand why the U.S. industry has such a credibility gap?
... And why are some of you surprised..? They are still flush with endorphins from the recent persuasive manipulation of the national election - viewed as massively successful among their own ranks - and feel it's their divine right to now focus on the troubled US auto industry and see to it that the "correct" perspective is provided to the public (the truth, don't you know...). And the real message to the public is... "trust us to tell you what you need to believe... after all, it's for your own good..."

There was so much damage done back in the '70's and '80's with poor quality and un-inspiring cars along with less than stellar customer support (speaking from experience here!) that so alienated buyers that getting them back is like pushing a chain uphill. Time for the awareness campaign to kick in as to how they have turned the corner some time ago and are now producing quality, dependable iron based on real data. Maybe there is a silver lining in all this "bail out" turmoil that provides the focus and opportunity to do just that. It's sure getting the focus on the UAW!! They need to take full advantage of this opportunity, it may be their last. The Corvette is one example to be leveraged along with others mentioned in this thread.

This is some funny stuff! Thanks man.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
That said, GM is suffering because their design team and management is lost. GM cars aret selling because people dont like the way they look. Other than corvette. Zero inspiration. What car do folks have to look forward to that may fall into a "company saving car"? I can think of one. It was called Volt. GM designed an extremely desirable car that garnered tons of press attention, people loved the new aged styling....they said it would be out in 2010. THEN released a car that looks like a Korean copy of the Prius.
I understand concept cars are a bit different than cars that go to market....you know; cheaper headlights, toned down interior appointments, 18" wheels rather than 20", cheaper paint, etc....
Fluffing out and producing a copy of the prius is a great example of why GM is in the crapper.
With the right marketing strategy, and EVEN if the Volt had a $50k price tag, people would have clamored to buy this car:

Instead, they deliver this

They dont need the media to screw the pooch.
Can't find that article about what cars congress drives right now and a google gives me the typical sht# results from that slanted search engine...
for starters, check out:

It's not the media. It's not the unions. It's not the Democrats. It's 40 years of pi**- poor management.
Bad cars (the 70's and 80's), wrong cars, inability to understand their customers, poorly negotiated contracts with their workers and dealers, etc., etc.
It's not some vast diabolical conspiracy
They brought it on themselves.
