Has anyone installed one of these battery chargers and if so what are your issues or comments about it?
What do you mean by install?
Many here use the CTEK, including myself, and I have never heard of a problem. Some use the normal alligator clips, some use the cigarette lighter plug, and some just attach the quick connect leads to the battery. All choices seem to work equally well.
I have one and it works great. I clip it to my battery once a month and when I am out of town. I still have the factory battery which was installed almost four years ago. Early on I killed the battery 5 times with a bad MP3 converter unit. Still, all is well.
I use one as I don't drive my Vette every day and sometimes I don't drive it for weeks. I think the trickle charger works great and even though I use a Priority Start I don't have to worry about resetting all the settings for the seats etc.
It's a great little charger that works really well.
I've had trouble getting a good connection with the cheap clamps that they supply.
You know when you don't have a good connection because charging LED indicator flashes rapidly.
So, I hard-wired mine with the included wire connectors.
Works perfectly now.
I have both CTEK 3300s and Schumacher battery tenders and have used both types on my C6 and other vehicles. Both have worked very well on everything from the C6 to farm and lawn tractors with no problems. The Schumacher is available at Walmart for just under $20 so is considerably less costly than the 3300. So far I have not been able to see any difference between them for performance.
what do I need a battery charger for? I thought our cars had alternators to charge the battery
I too thought the same until I read the manual and found out the alternator kicks in only when you have left impulse speed. Check out the manual, it's on page 51, in the area 7 section.
